AMERICAN IDOL - SIMON COWELL CUTS LOOSE

Well it didn't' take long for American Idol judge Simon Cowell to be his old self… that being rude and self indulgent. Two weeks ago at the Hollywood tryouts he walked out on a contestant who is aspiring to be a politician. Cowell apologized the following day.

BUT WAIT!!!! THERE'S MORE!!!!

Last week the show started its elimination process to cut the 24 contestants that made the Hollywood cut to the top 12. The first show they cut to 20 by eliminating two girls and two boys from votes via SMS.

In the judges critique portion of the show Cowell went away from his job of critiquing a contestant's performance and got personal by attacking an eliminated persons pale appearance by saying, "You look like you've been shut up in your bedroom for a month." He recommended to another eliminated contestant, "Get a good job and enjoy singing because I don't think you'll make a successful career out of it."

All together now… lets sing to the melody of Ritchie Vales hit song Oh Donna and insert…. OH SIMON… OH SIMON.

There are several excellent singers this season that the AI judges claim to be the best top 24 EVER. We disagree.

Thus far Ramiele Macrowon Malubay 20, from Miramar, FL is outstanding. Her musical influences are Aretha Franklin, Jackson 5, Mariah Carey, Lani Misalocha, and Regine Velasquez.

David Archuleta 17, also stands out. Archuleta is from Salt Lake City, Utah. His musical influences include Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin, Bryan Adams.

The show currently airs three times a week until they cut to the Top 12 contestants who will compete for the AI title.

In Southeast Asia the show airs three times on Wednesday, Thursday and the elimination show on Friday. The Friday elimination show repeats at noon on Saturday. Please see the schedule below.

FRESHIE CONTEST ELIMINATES TWO

Freshie Girl # 8, 18-year-old high school student Yin Lachlydory 18, was eliminated from he Freshie contest February 23rd on the telecast on Cambodia's TV 5. Freshie Boy # 6 Si Seven a 21-year-old university student was also eliminated.

This season the decision was made by three judges whose votes counted as 50% of the result and the people that train the contestants accounted for the other 50%. In the previous six seasons of the show the viewing public had a voice through voting via SMS. Their votes accounted for 1/3rd of the decision. The Freshie organizers hastily put this season's show together and failed to negotiate an agreement with a cell phone company for SMS voting.

Four persons were selected for the Rising Star Award (best talent). The winner will be announced at the Final that is scheduled to take place March 31st. The four selected were chosen by CMM/Grammy records officials. The winner will be offered a recording contract. The four finalists are Freshie Boy # 5 Keo Bora and # 9 Hang Sambermsak and Girls # 4 Van Sampos and # 9 Si Sonita.

Mira Sorvino Stars in the film Human Trafficking

While scanning television channels on one of those sleepless nights Mira Sorvino appeared on the screen on the Hollywood Channel at 2 AM. I've been a fan of Sorvino since she made an appearance at one of our Television Critics Tour presentations in 1996 promoting 'Norma Jean & Marilyn Marilyn Monroe' a film made for television that earned her Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations.

After watching the the Hollywood Channel for a few minutes I found the subject matter profound. It was about human trafficking a subject that we have covered in the past and dealing with for the past 20 years on numerous trips to Southeast Asia.

Though this film was made in Montreal, Canada the scenes set were for New York, Russia and the Philippines. Human Trafficking was a television mini-series about an agent going undercover to stop an organization from trafficking people, it also showed the struggles of three trafficked women. It premiered in the United States on Lifetime Television on October 24, 2005 and later aired on CityTV in several major Canadian markets.

I tuned in late but the first scene I saw was a 16-year-old girl auditioning to be a model without her father being aware. She wanted to escape having to live in poverty and help her father. She was being interviewed and supposedly helped by a 40ish year-old lady. The result... she was tricked and sold to a Russian Mafia gang running a prostitution business as well as a dating service.

Another scene depicted 12-year-old girl being snatched off the streets in Manila, Philippines and taken to a bar owned by a disgustingly fat old American man. He had sex with her and beat her as he did with the other children. One Philippine girl was sold to him by her father. She became ill. The 12-year-old kidnapped girl suggested that he take her to the hospital. Rather than do that and try to save the girls life he murdered her to avoid exposing his business.

Another girl was murdered when she was saved by Sorvino's character's ICE (Immigration Control Enforcement) and placed in a SAFE HOUSE. She was shot from a nearby rooftop when she stepped out on the balcony. Other girls including the aspiring model were transported in freight containers from one country to another.

It's SOS in this region where it is believed the Russian Mafia exists and uses young girls in the same manner. SOS means 'same old $#!t' to some and 'same old story' to others. Whatever your interpretation the results are the same young girls being tricked, sold by their parents or kidnapped into prostitution.

Along with Sorvino it starred Donald Sutherland and Robert Carlyle, with a supporting cast including Rémy Girard, Laurence Leboeuf, Isabelle Blais, Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse and Céline Bonnier. On May 2, 2006, Muse, with the permission of Lifetime, released a DVD of the entire mini-series, which also included deleted scenes not shown on the Lifetime airing.

The DVD also includes interviews with the cast, interactive resources, and scene selections. The DVD is worth viewing if you miss the reruns on the Hollywood channel.

TOP MODEL TAKES A RESPONSIBLE STAND

One of my pet peeves is watching irresponsible programming in Southeast Asia. Cambodia ranks on the top of the list followed by Thailand. Cambodia's programming shows bad images of the use of liquor, firearms and abusive behavior towards women. A supposedly beauty contest doing a makeover on a wholesome student from the provinces by layering makeup and cheap jewelry on her as if she was auditioning for a job as a service girl at a men's club. I was shocked to hear one foreigner who produces programming for Cambodian television say "give them what they want."

That analogy is like saying if a person gets out of jail after doing 20 years for murder and wants a gun you give it to him. Or…. If some is released from drug rehabilitation and wants heroin you give it to them. The lack of social responsibility is evident on Cambodian television programming in a country that is recognized for genocide.

Conversely America's Top Model is a show watched by many young Cambodian females according to our on the street research as well as interviews with Freshie Girl contestants. It's a reality the America's Top Model producer and host Tyra Banks is taking into account with this seasons (in Southeast Asia) cycle nine. The theme for the cycle is taking a stand and making a statement for not smoking cigarettes noting she is targeting the "young girl fans of Top Model," not to smoke.

As 13 girls vie for the Top Model title they must co-exist in a house together Banks has mandated a non smoking in the house rule for the contestants. The second episode of the show featured the models taking before and after pictures noting the negative side effects from smoking. Those pictures included premature aging, face tumor, hair loss as a result of chemotherapy, collapsed lung, sunken face and others.

As usual this season the show includes girls with a mix of backgrounds that includes the country girl, insecure, the mouthy always complaining inner city tough bitch and a sweet innocent wholesome type.

In recent cycles the show was too much Tyra and not enough focus on the girls. Up to this point Banks appears to be taking a step back and let the girls have more prominent roles on the program.

A new episode of the show is televised on Channel V Monday's at 6 PM Thailand/Cambodia and & 7 PM Hong Kong/Singapore time. Repeats are televised throughout the week, please see schedule the below.
