NR Top 20 According to Yahoo - MAY 2006
James Loving - National Radio Text Service - Tuesday May 30, 2006 YAHOO ratings vastly different from GOOGLE - YAHOO heavy focus on Asia - 16-year-old Cambodian track star Sou Tit Linda Tops the list - Cambodian Football grabs six spots in Top 10 - HUMAN TRAFFICKING NEW ON THE LIST - American football's (NFL) Howie Long new entry - Also Google NR Top 10 for May
YAHOO RANKINGS VASTLY DIFFERENT FROM GOOGLE When it comes to rating the National Radio Top 20 Yahoo painted a much different picture than Google. For whatever reason Yahoo seems to be more focused on a regional perspective since all of their listings are of Asian stories in the Top 10. Google rated only four of the NR top 10 stories of Asian subjects. Cambodian track athlete 16-year-old Sou Tit Linda who competed in the Olympic Games in Greece tops the list. In the past she was listed on the Google Top 20 most recently being rated #11 in April. Part time ESPN sports analyst Scott O'Donell came in 2nd regarding his experience while briefly being the Cambodian national team football coach. Cambodian football was the dominant subject as six of the top 10 stories are related to the Cambodia football program. They also rated two travel stories in the top 10 and Yahoo only one that being the advantages of avoiding Bangkok's traffic problems by using the canal and riverboats. Though the story is almost two years old Carlos Roberto Carvalho quitting as the Thailand's national football coach after only nine months on the job still stimulates interest as it holds the 4th position. Google rated one business story Fox Searchlight Pictures Promotes Zola Mashariki to Vice President of Production ranked number seven. Yahoo listed no business stories. Business is a new category addition for NR. We will monitor Yahoo to see how up to date they are in their survey. Another interesting aspect to the Google verses Yahoo ratings is Google listed an entertainment story on the Grammy Music Awards at number 10. Yahoo listed no entertainment stories. Entertainment is a sleeping giant for NR. It is a newly activated category prompted by our coverage of Cambodia's Freshie talent and beauty contest for boys and girls. Football continues to be the focus as the story regarding Vietnam striker Pham Van Quyen arrested for SEA Games match fixing is ranked number seven. Cambodia Football Rising From The Ashes remains a high rank falling into the number eight spot. This story topped the list on Google for almost two years. The story on famed Pulitzer Award winning journalist Jim Murray has ranked number one for the past year on Google ranked 12th on Yahoo.
TOP 11 - 20 The 11 through 20 spots had a few surprises. Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is ranked 11 regarding his possible hiring as England's next coach. NEW ADDITIONS - American football was recognized with our story on Howie Long who was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame occupies the 14th position. HUMAN TRAFFICKING attracted attention and ranked 17th. It is the first time this story has reached the top 20 though it was written almost two years ago. Also new was the story of Canada winning the handicapped Volleyball tournament featuring MVP Neil Johnson. The mainstays continue Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh Sihanouk's involvement in Cambodia football ranked 16th. Travel sparked some interest with the Royal Palace notching the 18th spot. Asian Equation a story that was previously ranked number one returns. It offers an insight of what music artists appeal to Asian youth. Our next Yahoo ratings will be reported on the second Tuesday of June.
