GREGG POPOVICH NAMED NBA COACH OF THE YEAR

San Antonio Spurs GREGG POPOVICH was named NBA Coach of the Year and received the Red Auerbach Trophy. He is the first Spurs coach in their history to win the award. The six-year Spurs coach received 281 points, including 40 first-place votes from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters in the United States and Canada.

Popovich led the squad to a 60-win season enabling them to have home court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Spurs had consecutive 58 win seasons their two previous campaigns.

The Golden State Warriors first-year head coach Eric Musselman finished second with 231 points (26 first-place votes) and Utah's Jerry Sloan finished third with 143 points (18 first-place votes).

Popovich was an assistant coach for the Spurs under then coach Larry Brown from 1988-92. He left the squad and became Don Nelson's assistant at Golden State in the summer of 1992. He rejoined as their general manager on May 31, 1994. He took over as head coach in December 1996.

The NBA had a players strike during the 1998-99 season and the league played an abbreviated 50 game regular season schedule. That season Popovich led San Antonio to its first NBA title, a five-game triumph over the New York Knicks, in the 1999 NBA Finals.

The Coach of the Year Award is named after former Boston Celtic coach Hall of Famer Red Auerbach who led the Celtics to nine NBA Championships.
