He rejoined as their general manager on May 31, 1994. He took over as head coach in December 1996. The NBA had a players strike during the 1998-99 season and the league played an abbreviated 50 game regular season schedule. That season Popovich led San Antonio to its first NBA title, a five-game triumph over the New York Knicks, in the 1999 NBA Finals. The Coach of the Year Award is named after former Boston Celtic coach Hall of Famer Red Auerbach who led the Celtics to nine NBA Championships. *** POPOVICH CAREER COACHING REGULAR SEASON & POST SEASON YEAR TEAM WINS LOSSES PCT WINS LOSSES PCT 1996 San Antonio 17 47 .266 - 0 0 .000 1997 San Antonio 56 26 .683 - 4 5 .444 1998 San Antonio 37 13 .740 - 15 2 .882 1999 San Antonio 53 29 .646 - 1 3 .250 2000 San Antonio 58 24 .707 - 7 6 .538 2001 San Antonio 58 24 .707 - 4 6 .400 2002 San Antonio 60 22 .732 - 2 2 .500 TOTALS 339 185 .647 33 24 .579 TRIVIA QUESTION: Red Auerbach won the coach of the year award for the 1964-65 season.
