During this HISTORY period all but one of our TOP 10 ratings are sports related stories. It was a time we expanded our coverage to have an international flavor.

In 1998 we expanded our coverage to include Asia. Our first venture was covering the Asian Games. At that time the Internet was very slow and had numerous malfunctions.

The Asian Games organization worked extremely hard to provide adequate equipment for the media. The problem was the Internet connectivity from Asia to our facilities in America were spotty. The good news is we worked it out and the Asian Games provided us with three of our most read articles at that time.

Asian Gold was the third Asian Games story. It was about the medal winners of the competition. That column tops the list as being the most popular of the three during that period. It takes the top position in this edition of out NR TOP 10 History ratings.

CHINA won its fifth consecutive Asian games. The Chinese totaled 274 medals, 129 Gold, 77 Silver and 68 Bronze. They fell short of their best ever gold total of 137, when they won at Hiroshima in 1994. Japan's then 28-year-old track star KOJI ITO was voted the game's MVP. Ito completed the golden hat-trick winning gold medals for the 100 meter and 200-meter runs. He also won a gold medal with Japan's 4x100m sprint relay team.

Lakers Time Bomb takes the second position. It covered the tumultuous period of the franchise during the maturation of chemistry between their two stars Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant as well as the entire squad. The addition of DENNIS RODMAN turned the Lakers from LOSERS to winners. The question was how long would it last?

We raised the question how would the Lakers do in their last year in THE HOUSE THAT former Lakers owner JACK [Kent Cooke] BUILT, the Forum? The new leader of the pack was Jerry Buss. The team was scheduled to move from the arena to play in the newly built Spectrum Arena.

As it turned out the Lakers took four of this month's HISTORY TOP 10 positions.

The third spot was LAKERS "ACTION JACKSON." We coined the term that since that time has become a popular axiom by SHOULDA, WOULDA, COULDA BOYS referring to the team as the SHOULDA, WOULDA, COULDA BOYS. They had an excuse for everything when their results weren't favorable.

After securing six NBA titles with the Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls Phil Jackson took the reigns of the team. From the outset we quipped that, all the Kings horses and all the kings' men couldn't put Humpty Dumpty back together again. But all things being equal, maybe Jackson can do it for the Lakers. If he can't, nobody can. JACKSON took on the task be the coach in a $30 million, six-year deal.

As history notes Jackson turned the team's fortunes around. His biggest job was getting the best out of O'Neal and Bryant to work together for the benefit of the team. He also had to meld them together to coexist with other team members with the end game is to win together. The shoulda, woulda, coulda was an identity to be related to the past. Jackson made a silk purse out of sow's ear. He became a master of melding massive egos to blend is as a force as opposed to being turmoil.

As it turned out pecks' bad boy Dennis Rodman's THE DENNIS RODMAN STORY notched the fourth spot. The outrageous one said, "I've shocked a lot of people in my time, but viewers are going to get a lot more than they expect when they tune in," Rodman said. "Everybody thinks they know who I really am, and for the first time I answer those questions honestly. It's sure to surprise all the people who think they know the real me."

The former NBA basketball star turned actor made the televised movie, "Bad As I Wanna Be: The Dennis Rodman Story." It is about a portion of Rodman's life. The film was televised Internationally.

The film was intended to give many of his fans to know him outside of his NBA basketball career a chance to see the roots from whence he came. The exposure he gained from his relationship with recording/acting star Madonna helped create his cult celebrity.

CAMBODIA THE CAMBODIAN BORDER GAME is the only non-sports story to make the list. It is one of the most memorable articles that we have written. A major injury that still exists resulted in our activity in this experience. This story takes the fifth position.

If you intend to take the ferry to Sihanoukville, Cambodia from Koh Kong you had to plan on giving yourself time for make a lake crossing or you might miss the ferry and have stay the night in Koh Kong, Cambodia. The boat departs at 8am. The border opens at 7am. If you are detained for any reason, you more than likely will not reach the ship in time for departure.

We had a people problem where one person was in charge of those; he deemed worthy of boarding a boat to make the crossing. Basically, he was in charge of granting the right of passage. His end game was to be paid money to board a boat. His decision was arbitrary.

Some tourists were being purposely delayed buy touts trying to rip you off for fees to get you to the ferry. They will intentionally slow you down. If you miss the boat they will (help?) you find accommodations for which they will be paid a commission. [We'll have more on this later].

Since that time they've built a bridge that eliminates the dinghy hassle. With that said, on one experience a dinghy driver stopped in the middle of the bay and insisted that we pay double. We paused but agreed. Then the ferry sounded it horn to board for departure. The dinghy drive dropped us down shore away from the ferry.

Moto drivers yelled to us to drive us to the ferry. They alerted us it was about to depart. We jumped out of the dinghy in knee deep water, paid the dinghy driver the original price and rushed to the shore. We then sprinted to the boat just in time. Friends we traveled with from Thailand asked, what happened. What happened was the border hustle cheat you mentality. Bridge or no bridge, that cheat you mentality remains.
