GOLDEN OLDIES - 2nd Edition

Make no mistake the insight for a story that will have shelf life is imperative. Best That is the case of the Williams Sisters rising to their very best against all odds. That is exactly what happened with the Williams sisters. They rose from the jungle of Compton California to rise to the top of the tennis world.

We were fortunate enough to write stories about the sisters when they were in their developmental stage. There are some things that are said out of honesty and being authoritative.

That was the case when a then, I believe a then 16-year-old Serena replied in a challenging manner. In a post-match press conference, she was challenged with they way her father raised his children. She replied why don't you ask him. Her father Richard was standing next to me.

He raised the girls like a drill sergeant. He was tough. He was loud. He was not going to take any disobedience from them. He talked and they listened.

The kinship was obvious when we wrote, Tennis Williams, "We are family." That captured the essence of the foundation that enabled the girls to be mentally tough to ward off the verbal abuse that being black would come their way. That is one of the two stories on the NR TOP 10 History chart. It took the 9th position.

We noticed that in 1998 when the girls competed in the Virgina Slims tournament. Neither had yet to win a tournament let alone a grand slam. We heard the above comments after a match Serena played in.

During the afternoon break preceding Serena's match that evening we were in the stands in an empty arena. The sisters were the only other people there. They were sitting opposite us apparently going over what had to be done. There was no Richard just the girls hashing things out.

It was after Serena's match that evening that we came up with an assumption. When you're around the Williams sisters you get a sense that they know where they are on the road to their success and are programmed to block out negative thinking by others and toxic people. That was one of the most important messages Richard imbedded in their competitive philosophy.

That tournament resulted in the story WTA's TEEN QUEENS which took the top position in this month's chart.

The purpose of the History NR TOP 10 is to recall our top stories from all platforms, radio, print and internet. The TOP 10 are not to reflect the strength of popularity but to recall those that attracted the most interest from our National Radio inception in 1989.

NFL Hall of Fame star Walter Peyton notched the second spot on this month's chart. This column attributed his greatness and death.

A THAILAND HOSTS ASIAN GAMES - AGAINST ALL ODDS from December, 1998 is in third place. It captured the essence of Thailand's last-minute challenges to complete preparations for the games. We noted that it was DOWN TO THE WIRE AS TIME WAS RUNNING OUT. The results were positive and the games were a success.

PETER WITHE'S SOCCER MAGIC - THAILAND'S ROAD TO RESPECT from MAY 1999 is in the fourth position. The Englishman took a team that had a miserable and embarrassing losing history. With turned that team around and made the winners. They achieved the winning ways by defeating Japan in the Asian Games. Japan had competed in the World Cup. Thailand won one of top three the most incredible games we have ever seen. They won the game with just none men. From that point on Thailand turned the fortunes around and began winning again.

In the fifth position is Brazil coach Luxemburgo Shows Ignorance - Brazil Thrash Thailand from February, 2000. That was a wake-up call for Thailand. Brazil had ROBERTO CARLOS, CAFU, DIDA, RONALDINHO, MARIO JARDEL, ROQUE JUNIOR, CLAIDIO CACAPA, EMERSON, and ZE ROBERTO. They had no intention of being another Japan result.

Ironically the star of this article was their manager Wanderly Luxemburgo. During a post-game press conference an English-speaking journalist asked for the questions and answers to be interpreted in English. Translations were made only in Thai and Portuguese.

The Brazilian became ignorant and arrogant by giving about a seemingly five-minute speech because he didn't want to. He spent more time being adamant than having English translations. Believe it or not that story has been in the top 20 recently and made the top 10 this year. The column is 24-years-old.

Another NFL story made some noise. HOWIE LONG IN NFL HALL of FAME notched the sixth spot. Long made his underdog life TOP DOG is an August, 2000 story.

Long overcame a tough life as a youth. He moved from place to place. He found a home at Vilanova University. From there he was drafted by the then Oakland Raiders. He went on to have a Hall of Fame career.

What is more interesting is while Long was not easy to interview he is now a media analyst on TV. Moreso, he fathered sons that also went on the have credible NFL careers.

A sports Feature NBA OR BUST is 7th. An experience with an NBA player shooting hoops at a recreational court with his girlfriend. We interacted with him. That resulted in our report.

We related to for many players the job security is tentative. We pointed out that after taxes how much does a minimum salaried player clear? They might be considered the impoverished privileged.

We failed to note another expense� paying their agents. All NBA players are not as wealthy as LeBron James. A minimum salaried player is not going to settle down and buy a house. Their careers can be short lived.

NBA TRIVIA from June 2001 takes the 8th position. It explores the talent that comes from Philadelphia. Of note mentioned are Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant and Earl 'The Pearl' Monroe.

It also relates to the relationships some players have with the area and teams in the region. Some readers may be surprised with the some of the results.

As mentioned, the Williams sisters took ninth place.

The only non-sports story that made this list is Dr Beat and his free health care for Cambodian children. This story is one of the top three of all time most read story.

To be clear some radio stores that make the lists are rated by the magnitude it creates. Three four those stories had the same significance by being mentioned on TV sports news or games, as well as sports radio programs shortly after our radio features aired. The text and internet listings are not necessarily ranked due to the number of views but more closely related to the date published.

Payton is the NFL's all-time career rushing leader with 16,726 yards. He was the league MVP twice. The NFL Hall of Fame member was also a champion, having been a member of the Chicago Bears 1985 Super Bowl team. He passed away Monday November 1, 1999 from bile duct cancer. He was only 45 years of age.
