Video Beat - American Idol Say Good-bye to Chris Sligh - April 2007

James Loving - National Radio Text Service Sunday April 1, 2007

Chris Sligh Eliminated From American Idol & Sanjaya Malakar A Hit or a Miss??? - Olivia Newton-John Receives - Television Journalist Barbara Walters Is On - Amazing Race ASIA Extends Application Deadline - Amazing Race All-Stars Special Time - Amy Winehouse Is Getting It On - Johnny Cash Movie - Recommended TV schedule

AMERICAN IDOL Down to Final 9

American Idol Says Good-bye to Chris Sligh the 28-year-old Greenville, South Carolina USA resident. Sligh was the victim of picking a song "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" that was difficult to get a groove on.

Unlike Brandon Rogers and Stephanie Edwards who departed because Richardson forgot the words resulting in a bad performance and Edwards singing a song that she wasn't familiar or comfortable with.

Sligh gained a reputation as a quit wit from the time he first auditioned in Birmingham, Alabama. That sense of humor was somewhat appealing to the judges. His voice stood up to the test to reach the number 10 spot in the countdown to the 2007 American Idol title but his choice of songs failed him miserably.

Sligh sang a song recorded by the Police "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" that has counter movements and is not a straight-ahead song. Between him and the band the song never got locked down where there was a comfortable feeling. It's a case of a bad song choice.

A musician that has reached that level of play where it goes beyond reading the music. The ultimate result is a blend of playing the notes, feeling the notes, feeling the rhythm to the CLIMAX of feeling the GROOVE. THAT IS THE SUM OF ALL PARTS as well as blending in with the vocalist. It results in one dynamic pulse.

It's difficult for a singer to know this particularly if they have little or no experience in a recording studio. Had Sligh understood this he most likely would have chosen a song that is simple to do.

This is the second week in a row where the band could be somewhat at fault. Again in fairness to the musicians and Sligh they must have a limited amount of time to practice a song with all 10 contestants.

In addition the bands rhythm section is separated from the brass and string sections. That set-up can result in a delay in hearing where they are and not being together regardless of how well they can read sheet music.

If a song has varied counter movements it takes more time to get it down (worked out/finished correctly). The American Idol band must have approximately 18 musicians resulting in more time to get the overall feel of the groove locked in. In this case Sligh and the band didn't reach a CLIMAX.

Before Sligh rode off into the sunset of American Idol eliminated contestants the shows host Ryan Seacrest stated these parting words to the television audience, "Chris Sligh one of the most clever contestants we've ever had."

Haley Scarnato felt the heat as she was standing next to Sligh as being the last two to remain on stage until Seacrest announced that she was safe and could sit down.

TRY-YA SANJAYA

If it's debate you're looking for try on American Idol contestant pretty boy Sanjaya Malakar who is receiving a lot of media criticism saying that he shouldn't be on the show and that he has no talent. LISTEN UP…

Malakar has a good enough voice to make a record. His strength is his good looks and sweet personality. That sells. As all of the AI judge's point out to the 17-year-old is he is not letting his talent go (release). He seems to be a bit reticent about getting down into the heart of a song and just gets by with singing it sweetly. It comes down to he's thinking too much and feeling too little.

It really doesn't matter if Sanjaya wins the contest or not he has a future in the entertainment business providing he gets the right management and training for development.

His appeal to the young teenybopper audience is unmatched in this competition. He has the appeal and probably the votes from the 12-year-old age group and up. Some moms will likely vote for him because he's cute.

Winning or being successful in the entertainment business doesn't come down to having a big or the best voice it's about talent and marketability. At this stage Malakar has the appeal and has the makings of a recording, TV and film star.

When you see an approximately 12-year-old girl in the American Idol audience crying her eyes out just at the sight of Sanjaya you know he has something going for him.

He could be a star just by using one name SANJAYA and join the ranks of Fabian, Elvis, Sting and other one-name entertainers. Ask your self this question…how many Sanjaya's do you know?

Since the show began Malakar has been maturing and is up to the task of taking his hits. He jumped on Simon Cowell who commented on Malakar's Mohawk hairstyle on the performance show the day prior.

Malakar adroitly replied to Cowell, who's hair style is a military crew-cut, that Cowell was jealous because he couldn't pull it off. Malakar's balls are getting bigger with each sow and each criticism.

That's a sign that he is on track to have the tough skin it takes to survive in show business.

As Cowell says, "It doesn't matter what we say, you're in your own universe." Nuff said.
