Bye Bye Malubay

After Ramiele Malubay's Fate It's Down to the Final Eight In a shocking turn of events Ramiele Malubay was eliminated from American Idol. The 20-year-old singer of Philippine heritage fell victim to choosing songs that failed to show off her super voice.

This week songs were chosen from those written by country singing star Dolly Parton. When AI host Ryan Seacrest asked the pop/soul singing Malubay if she trouble connecting to country songs she replied, "A little bit."

Malubay has one of the three best quality voices of all of the contestants on the show. The others being David Archuleta and Carly Smithson with Syesha Mercado not far behind.

With Malubay's departure no longer will the show have that smiling face that radiates with sunshine. The concern is with all of her talent combined with her inexperience where will Malubay go next? She is most certainly deserving of a singing and recording career but where? Malubay seems so innocent it begs the question is she mature and ready enough to deal with the real world of the recording business sharks?

The good news is that in making the AI top 10 she will tour with that group this summer on the annual AI tour of the top 10 contestants. That will give her more time to mature and get more experience working in front of a crowd as well as touring. She has a strong voice but what market does she fit in?

Her innocence is remindful of a Sherwood Oaks Entertainment Business college student in the mid 1970's complaining to guest instructor and President of United Artists Records Artie Mougal that he was not pleased with the type of individuals he was meeting in the record business. To which Mogul replied, "If its integrity you're looking for, you're in the wrong business."

And that is the harsh reality of the record business. How can a young girl whose job was filling up paper cups with soy sauce at a restaurant survive in such a treacherous business? Malubay's problem of not choosing the right material is really not a problem in the real world of the recording industry, that is the job of the record producer.

David Foster is the type of producer that would be right for Malubay but can he take her on or does he care? He recently said on an AI telecast that he was going to work with former AI runner-up Katharine McPhee. A producer can only concentrate on a limited amount of artists at a time.

Malubay's other hope is support from her Philippine background. In the Philippines the ABS-CBN Network has been recruiting English speaking talent from around the world with Philippine heritage to appear on their Big Brother and Dream Academy reality television shows. From that they take the best talent and develop them in the Philippines by signing them as singers and actors.

There are several talents from America who have made it in the Philippines namely Gerald Anderson and Sam Milby. Neither of whom possess the quality of voice that Malubay has. Her musical Influences are Aretha Franklin, Jackson 5, Mariah Carey, Philippine singer Lani Misalocha, and Regine Velasquez.

Misalocha is a star in the Philippines but is currently working at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada with the Society of Seven band. She has been around for a while and knows the business and the hardships she's faced trying to make a name for herself in America. This lady is the perfect role model and mentor for Malubay.

To be concerned about Malubay's future is warranted given her innocence and her desire to succeed in a business that will chew you up and spit you out. Hopefully she can learn from the Gloria Gaynor song, 'I Will Survive.'

David Cook continues to shine as a person who knows his musical identity as he's maintains his string of choosing the right songs for his voice. His strength is his arrangements of those songs. He's strong enough in those areas to produce himself.

Kristy Lee Cook has improved the most over the pest few weeks. Since she's choosing songs that have a country flavor she has been impressing the judges and could be a surprise final six candidate. At the end of the day (I hate that cliché) Malubay has had her fate and now it's down to the AI Final Eight.

Who will be the next American Idol? Stay tuned.

Note:

Since starting the final 12 the show airs only two days a week Wednesday and Thursday in the Asian region and Tuesday and Wednesday in America.

CONTENDER ASIA SEMIFINAL

The Contender Asia reality TV show has reached the final four with John Wayne Parr from Australia, Thai champion fighter Yodsaenklai, Sean Wright from Scotland and Dzabhar Askerov from Russia that will be televised this Wednesday April 9 on AXN. At press time the pairings weren't announced. It is meant to be a surprise that will be announced on the telecast.

It was a strange course of events that took place to bring about this final four. When the fighters were announced as to whom would participate in the program the top three to win the title were Parr and the two well respected Thai fighters Yodsaenklai and Naruepol. Given their experience the Thais were favored to be in the final. With the exception of Parr the remaining 13 fighters were not of their class.

When eight fighters won their first round fights a Chinese chest with a blue and a red gnome were in two of the eight draws. To determine which fighters would face each other the fighters were to choose a draw to see who picked the draws with the gnome. The two that did would fight each other the color of the gnome determined what corner they would be in.

All of the fighters chose a draw before the Thais had a chance. None of the other fighters picked the draw with the gnomes thus the two Thais who are very close friends and train at the same gym and represent the same club had to face each other. Naruepol's heart wasn't in it and he lost to his friend.

In doing so what was anticipated was never going to happen that being an all Thai final. Thus there is a final four that represent four different nations. The question is why were the Thais the last to pick a draw and why weren't they separated in the order that the draws were chosen? File this away in the GO FIGURE FILE.
