NBA... REALITY THIS

If it's reality television you're looking for then a good one would be for the NBA to televise the 16 games in question regarding the NBA referees fixing, betting and giving tips to gamblers. The game most in question is game six of the 2002 Los Angeles Lakers verses the Sacramento Kings. At the time we reviewed that game in horror and disbelief as it unraveled and the unbelievable events that occurred when the Lakers were given numerous breaks on fouls they committed and the refs called fouls on the Kings that seemed invisible on the TV screen.

The NBA is suing one referee for US $1.4 million to recover lost funds in reviewing and fighting the case in the courts. Now here's the point….. televise the games and let the fans vote on what they think is true. Have a commentator pointing out various incidents that are in question in the game. Charge a nominal fee for voting that would go towards repaying the NBA's legal fees. The reality is in our view AT THE TIME, THE GAME RESULTS STUNK. PINOY DREAM ACADEMY - CONTROVERSY RETURNS

The Pinoy Dream Academy is on for its second season. The first edition in our opinion was abominable due to what appeared to be favoritism and judges enjoying hearing themselves talk rather than making astute opinions. This season they've made some changes and went to the American Idol format of choosing who was in and who was out in the preliminary stages of selecting contestants. Like AI there was a three person jury that made comments after a performance and decisions were made.

A new twist is the ABS-CBN Network in the past always tries to make romance out of their contestants by creating what they term a love couple. In many cases it is a contrived arrangement. This season they have two already made couples admitted to the contest. One has been married for five years with a child the other Miguel and Bea are boyfriend and girlfriend.

The contestants live in a commune environment throughout the contest and are taught the techniques of singing and performing. They perform on Saturday nights and are graded. The four lowest scores are subject for eviction. That decision is made on their show televised on Sunday night. This past Saturday contestant Laarni was the first to perform and had a sweet voice but was nervous and controlled. She though her way through her performance and was criticized for it by the judges. The result being the following day she received the lowest grade. The bottom four grades are subject for eviction but one can be saved by the judges. Another can be saved by the other contestants via voting. Now here's where the plot thickens.

Laarni received only two of the 13 votes cast by the other contestants to be saved. In our opinion Laarni's performance was in the middle of the pack of 16 singers and not worthy of elimination. Of the bottom four only two remain for elimination with Laarni being one of them. Bea the girlfriend of Miguel was in the bottom three after being one of the bottom four was saved other contestants by receiving eight of their votes. It raised our concern that something was wrong so we checked the Dream Academy website for some details.

As with all youth there is gossiping and backstabbing and the website noted that it occurred within the group towards Laarni. They have problems with her hygiene and noted that she interrupts others when they speak. This is major flaw in the competition since it is supposed to be about talent and not about personalities of peers who have their own personality problems given their age and in most cases their lack of experience in life.

Miguel was in the top three and deservedly so. He has one of the best voices in the competition. Bea was then saved by the contestant's votes. After the decision her boyfriend Miguel had a one on one talk with Laarni to discuss the situation and to try to get her to open up. The results aren't in as to what value the talk had. At this point it's up to the TV viewers to decide who goes and who stays.

Again this show has too many flaws. It's about favoritism and not about talent. Laarni seems to be set up to fail as was Iya in last seasons show. Given past experience we stopped noting the times of the shows televised on ABS-CBN Network due to their proclivity of changing the schedule with little or no notice.

Due to this favoritism issue we will note that the shows in house activity airs on TFC (The Filipino Channel) in the Thailand/Cambodia time zone at 5 PM, 7:30 PM and 10 PM Monday through Friday. The performance show aired last week at 9:30 PM and the evaluation show for elimination aired at 9 PM this past Sunday. As noted all of the times are subject to change or have a tendency to go on 5-10 minutes late.

Given our review we recommend that you take a look a make your own opinion. This is insightful for the entertainment value but also learning how people think and behave from another culture.

NOTE:

LIEZEL GARCIA was selected as the best performer this past week and Miguel second. Garcia is Filipino but was working in Dubai as an office worker prior to being selected for the contest. Her favorite singers are Beyonce Knowles and Celine Dion. Her musical influences are Mariah Carey, Beyonce Knowles, Kyla, Lani Misalucha, Jaya, Sarah Geronimo and Ella Mae Saison.

Garcia noted how she discovered her voice, "When I was very young, my grandmother and I would get up at 5:00 a.m. She would teach me Tagalog (Filipino) songs and we'd sing together. I remember I started singing in public since I was three years old.

MUSIC ROCKS ON VIDEO

There seems to be a lot of interest in the Commitments film about an Irish band that plays soul music. The film has aired several times in May and June on the MGM Network. It's a must watch for a very entertaining film with great music. As a result I've reached out and sought some information about the group and found that it continues to tour with two of the group's members having appeared in the film. In the process in a blast from my past it was also revealed that they recorded with guitar legend Steve Cropper who was with Booker T & the MG's who had a hit song "Green Onions."

Booker was a guest on my TV show in America in the 80's. I later met Cropper at a party at his house in Hollywood where he revealed that not many people were familiar who he was. For sure they know of his work having written "Knock On Wood" and "Soul Man" that was featured in the Blues Brothers film. In the world of I didn't know that…. now you know.

We came across an old column where many of the people in the music business today were popular then including composer/producer David Foster who I first met when he was with Skylark. As Danny & The Juniors sang, "Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay" and obviously it is and many in the world still love it.

What was going on in music with Quincy Jones, Neil Diamond, Bob Seger, Bob Denver, Raphael Ravenscroft, Patrice Rushen, Little River Band, Jerry Weintraub and Leon Russell in 1979? READ ON...

The Bloom Fell Off The Rose

What happened to a contest for teens that did not live up to it's former standards when these words were spoken: "Our society now has a bad problem with drugs and domestic violence. In order to solve these problems you have to start with the family but sometimes they don't understand. That's where we come in. It's not going to solve the problems of the world but at least we started something. We teach being a good teen at home by being a good son or daughter. At school (we teach) being a good student, in society to be a good friend. This is the concept we teach." COMING - The Bloom Fell Off The Rose
