Why is American Idol putting these young mostly inexperienced contestants through a hoop jumping exercise by making them sing songs they may know nothing about? This is by far the worst talent the judges have chosen over the past five seasons that we have reviewed the show. There are no great voices as David Archuleta or Adam Lambert. There are no great individual talents who know themselves such as David Cook. - Recommended TV Listings

AMERICAN IDOL GOT IT WRONG

Now that the regular show has begun with the top 12 the program exposes their weak spot by having the contestants sing songs from varied genres and artists. This past week was rock n roll songs by the Rolling Stones who were popular during many of the contestant's grandparent's era.

This is where American Idol fails to be honest with itself and exposing its lack of integrity. They preach to the contestants be themselves and demonstrate the type of artist they you feel they are then dictate that they sing songs they most likely aren't familiar with, don't know or ever heard of plus have very little time to learn the lyrics and put their personal spin on it and prepare before show time. Going forward each week the contestants will have to sing songs that are most likely not in their style or the comfort zone for their voice.

Lacey Brown was the first victim to be knocked out of the top 12 competition. She's from Texas and is mostly a country music type singing artist. She chose the Stones song "Ruby Tuesday" resulting in her elimination. Brown came close last season when Idol went to the extreme of renting a mansion for the final elimination's for the top 12. Brown was eliminated at the mansion. This season though she made it to the top 12 she won't benefit as being a part of the top 10 which will go on the American Idol summer tour.

When country music becomes the theme of the week for Idol the most likely disadvantaged will be those who sing R&B or soul music. That particular week one of them will most likely be eliminated.

You could argue that one of the most successful albums the great soul singer Ray Charles was of country music. You can add to that list of cross generation that Booker T Jones from the 50's hit Green Onions by Booker T and The MG's was successful in producing famed country artist Willie Nelson's Star Dust album.

You can rationalize and argue all you want but get this right... American Idol is primarily composed of inexperienced contestants who as the judge's point out don't know who they are as an artist. Ray Charles and Booker T Jones had a wealth of experience and recording success and winning Grammy Awards before they took on the country music challenge.

If American Idol claims that they are looking for the best singer that can be a hit recording artist why are they putting these young mostly inexperienced contestants through a hoop jumping exercise by making them sing songs they may know nothing about or feel comfortable doing. The exercise contradicts the judge's critique that you don't know who you are as an artist or want to be.

This season the judges also seem to be out of their comfort zone as Randy Jackson is not calling people his dog as much as he has in previous seasons. Simon Cowell continues to be crude and rude but in a toned down manner. He's lost his viciousness and seems to be tranquilized. Kara DioGuardi has lost her charm from last season when she tried to fit in. Now with a season behind her and her former roommate Paula Abdul out of the picture DioGuardi has a cocky know it all attitude that is a turn off. She is too self assured in a Simon Cowell sort of way. Though Ellen Degeneres lacks a background in the music business her professionalism in the entertainment business is serving her well as she is getting over by her professional faking it with her generic comments.

This is by far the worst talent the judges have chosen over the past five seasons that we have reviewed the show. There are no great voices as David Archuleta or Adam Lambert. There are no great individual talents who know themselves such as David Cook who when critiqued by Simon Cowell told the judge he didn't care what he thought but it was what American voters thought that mattered. Cook was right as he won the contest with his talent and balls of individuality.

Part 3 - So who of these final 11 have the best chance to win? Tune in to Part 3 for our thoughts.
