INTEGRITY NOT IN THE AMAZING RACE

The Amazing Race closed out one of its most disappointing seasons ever. The undeserving winner's brothers Dan & Jordan were devious and dishonest with their tactics compared with the rules in previous races. After seeking out the help of fellow final four contestants and detectives Michael and Louie who were instrumental in the brother's survival to finish in the Top 3 the brothers changed their tactics and became piranhas.

In the previous leg Michael and Louie slowed themselves down to help Dan & Jordan resulting in the detectives finishing fourth and eliminated. In effect they helped Dan & Jordan finish third to qualify for the finals. Since Dan & Jordan finished late they departed from the pit stop 3 ½ later than the first to arrive contestants Brent and Caite who departed the pit stop at 2:37 AM. The Oklahoma cowboy brothers Jet and Cord departed 36 minutes later at 3:11 AM and the deceiving brothers departed at 6:00AM. Having to catch a flight to from Shanghai, China to San Francisco they all met up at the airport with the back stabbing brothers being last to arrive.

At the airport Dan & Jordan placed their backpacks in an open space behind Brent and Caite while the cowboys were napping. Several hours later when the lines opened up for bookings the brothers felt that since their bags were positioned behind the first arrivals Brent and Caite that they were entitled to be second in line. The cowboys took exception to that but maintained their cool as they rolled their eyes in disgust.

Dan & Jordan justified their disrespect by saying that the race was on for a million dollars and stated, "No one is gonna help anyone right now. Those days are gone." Lucky for them they took advantage of Michael and Louie's generosity of help during the previous leg.

The jostling for position in the check in line was to be seated as close to the front exit door as possible so they could be the first team off the plane. While on the plane Dan & Jordan talked to a stewardess requesting to be moved to first class thus being entitled to be the first of the passengers to exit. They won the race with the cowboys a close second.

Now here's the rub and a negative for the Amazing Race. In previous races it was required for the contestants to travel in coach class if not they would be punished usually by a time delay before they could check in at the finish line. By rights they brothers broke the rules and should not have been eligible to win the race.

Like America Idol the Amazing Race's quality of programming has deteriorated to the point where its time to shut it down and move on. When programs integrity is corrupted it loses its qualification of a show worth watching.

SCIENTOLOGY BLASTED ON TWO DIFFERENT SERIES

This past week was a rough one for Scientology as it was subject to investigative reports on Australia Network's Four Corners program and CNBC's series American Greed.

Four corners examined the background of the religious group and how much money it takes for someone to qualify being clear. As noted on the show it takes hundreds of thousands of dollars. After its followers each that level they are informed there is more to do requiring more money.

Several former Scientologists appear on the program noting what they endured before they realized that the religion was not for them and dropped out.

In American Greed focused on Scientologist Reed Eliot Slatkin born 22 January 1949 in Detroit, Michigan. Slatkin passed himself off as investor and was a co-founder of EarthLink. He was involved with Scientology from a young age and progressed up the chain of command to become an instructor and an ordained Scientology minister. He became the perpetrator of one of the largest Ponzi schemes in the United States since that conducted by Charles Ponzi himself.

Slatkin lived the good life in Santa Barbra, California conning wealthy investors. Since 1986 Slatkin had raised approximately $593 million from about 800 investors. Using the funds from later investors, he paid one group of early investors $279M on their original $128M investment, citing investment success without actually making most of the claimed investments. He also distributed millions in fees to associates as "consultants". He successfully sustained the scheme until shut down by the SEC's investigation

The twist of the American Greed story was that it noted Slatkin attributed his crimes to Scientology by insinuating that he was afraid to bring shame on the group from his fraudulent actions thus he continued on with his schemes to keep his hope alive that he wouldn't be discovered. His actions earned him the description of his occupation on Wikipedia as being a CON ARTIST.

Slatkin pled guilty to mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice and on September 2, 2003, he was sentenced to fourteen years in federal prison.
