Saturday September 18, 2010

If you previously missed its airing in August the CNBC documentary Bernie Madoff's Life in Prison is on the air tonight and tomorrow Saturday Sep 18 and Sunday September 19 on the CNBC Network.

BERNIE MADOFF'S LIFE IN PRISON

Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Madoff is an incarcerated former American stock broker, investment adviser, non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market, and the admitted operator of what has been described as the largest Ponzi scheme in history.

On March 2009, Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 federal crimes and admitted to turning his wealth management business into a massive Ponzi scheme that defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars. Madoff said he began the Ponzi scheme in the early 1990s. However, federal investigators believe the fraud began as early as the 1980s, and that the investment operation may never have been legitimate.

The amount missing from client accounts, including fabricated gains, was almost $65 billion. The court-appointed trustee estimated actual losses to investors of $18 billion. On June 29, 2009, he was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the maximum allowed.

American Greed shows the first year behind bars in the resort type prison at the Butner Federal Correctional Institution near Butner, North Carolina, about 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Raleigh.

On the program American Greed interviews a former prisoner at Butner who fraternized with Madoff. Another prisoner who wasn't identified also gave some insight to Madoff's activities and behavior behind bars as well as some of his victims one a lawyer who lost $5 million, a married couple who lost $1.6 million and a lady who lost over a quarter of a million dollars. FBI profiler Gregg McCrarey contributed his insight to Madoff's behavior.

Though Madoff wasn't interviewed this is a strong show in revealing the easy life he has in a prison that inmates have indoor and outdoor basketball courts, volleyball courts, state of the art fitness center, pool tables, enjoy barbecues with chicken and ribs and desert and have many other recreational facilities that other prisons lack. The programs narrator actor Stacey Keach also noted that the inmates also enjoy treats such as popcorn and cotton candy.

The facility also has a music room with instruments as well as a prison band who perform for the inmates on the July 4th holiday. The prison was designed to house inmates from other prisons could be transferred to if they had good behavior. The prison has dorms named after universities in the Atlantic Coast Conference giving it a college campus atmosphere giving it the nickname of Camp Fluffy..

The now 72-year-old inmate was perceived as a celebrity when he arrived in a bus with helicopters flying over as well as a huge media presence. As one convict said it was as if the mayor or the president was coming. But there were times when things went sour as Madoff was involved in confrontations with other prisoners regarding owing money. The piece noted that prison guards catered to the famous con man giving him preferential treatment.

Madoff also was believed to have had a physical confrontation with another inmate which caused him to be hospitalized. News reported described Madoff's injuries as more serious and including "facial fractures, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung." The Federal Bureau of Prisons said Madoff signed an affidavit on December 24, 2009, which says he was not assaulted and that he went to the hospital for hypertension. American Greed gave two sides to that story with one being a prisoner said that he had too much medication and blacked out and fell into a water fountain.
