SPORTS NOTES - JOSE (Mourinho) WHAT'S THE MATA?

James Loving/National Radio Text Service

Is Jose Mourinho going through an aging process? Why can't he get along with Iker Casillas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Juan Mata? Is this about power or tough love? Yea…. WHERE IS THE LOVE??? Is Mourinho a tough task master or is he becoming a power driven cantankerous old man? Problems with players first arose with Iker Casillas then Cristiano Ronaldo and most recently Juan Mata. Is Mourinho spot on or has he lost the plot?

WHERE IS THE LOVE?

Where is Rodney King when you need someone to ask WHY CAN'T WE ALL GET ALONG? Sadly King passed away but the question remains in International football. This past year we have heard of love lost between Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney. At the end of last season apparently love was lost between then Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo. That situation was resolved when Mourinho departed Real Madrid and took his act back to Chelsea where he previously had a lost love experience with owner Roman Abramovich and Ronaldo wins the FIFA Ballon d'Or.

Prior to this season love was reported to have been lost between new Manchester United manager David Moyes and oooppps there's that name again…. Wayne Rooney. But hey there's more controversy with two of the same protagonists playing the love lost game but this time one wins and the other loses…. which is up to public opinion.

Jose Mourinho again takes center stage in this latest caper which he pits himself against star Chelsea player and its Player of the Year Juan Mata. Mourinho wasn't happy about Mata's lack of defensive skills and placed him and his popularity on the bench. When questioned, Mourinho repeatedly stated that he wanted Mata to remain with the club. That was then but this is now…

It's no secret that Mata was transferred to Man U for a fee of 37.1 million pounds making Moyes a happy camper in hopes of brightening up his dismal season where Man U is guaranteed NOT TO WIN a trophy with their battered and bruised squad. The club's season is so bad and alarming that it prompted one fan to get drunk and call the police claiming that the team was knackered and insisted on talking to Sir Alex. The police informed the caller that they couldn't help him as the number he called was to report a crime. The caller drunkenly responded that this is a crime.

Following the call the deal was done and Mata is in Manchester to help save the day and ignite the career that Mourinho tried to snuff out. Really… it all doesn't make sense. On December 22, 2012, Mata signed a contract extension with Chelsea which tied him up with the club until 2018.

Under Mourinho Mata fell behind Oscar in the pecking order as the team's first-choice playmaker. Mourinho cited Mata's lack of defensive work as the main reason behind the player's frequent omission. On 28 September 2013, Mata came on as a second half substitute against Tottenham to assist John Terry to score an equalizer in a 1-1 draw, but his appearances in the first team remained infrequent. On 29 October 2013, Mata scored his first goal of the season in a 2-0 League Cup victory at London rivals Arsenal. Mata struggled to secure a regular first-team place under Mourinho as he had started just 11 of Chelsea's 22 Premier League matches, and overall just 18 appearances for Chelsea.

On 24 January 2014, Mourinho said Chelsea had accepted a transfer offer from Manchester United and he allowed Mata to travel to Manchester to undergo a medical, after the player said he was "really happy to go". Manchester United confirmed later in the day that a transfer fee had been agreed, but that the deal was still contingent on Mata agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. He completed his transfer to Manchester United on 25 January 2014, for a club record fee of £37.1 million.

Mourinho's actions are enough to prompt the Shadow to say… WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN…? (long pause) THE SHADOW KNOWS.

Well the Shadow didn't see this one coming as only Mourinho knows what if any evil lurks in his 51-year-old heart. At the time of the transfer Chelsea was in 3rd place on the table with 49 points through 22 games. They trail league leading Arsenal by only two points as the Gunners are on top with 51 points through 22 games. Man U were 7th on the table with only 37 points.

The twist is Arsenal manage Arsene Wenger is in no happy land since he feels the transfer puts Arsenal at a disadvantage since Chelsea has already played Man U twice and won't face Man U with Mata and his talents again this season. Wenger's side will have to deal with the new and expectedly improved Red Devils with Mata for the Gunners to protect their top of the table position.

The question remains what really was the deal between the popular and talented Mata and Mourinho. ONLY THE SHADOW AND MOURINHO know as Mata has been in the dark all season. With Man U he has a chance to see the light.

For Mourinho he continues to build his resume as becoming a cantankerous old man. It's never been explained what the problem was between he and Ronaldo. The most vivid picture was a video of the two in the tunnel preparing to come out for a game. Mourinho stood on the steps behind Ronaldo who was at the exit of the tunnel. Ronald motioned to Mourinho to come and join him and the Special One refused.

The only comments regarding the relationship between the two is Mourinho saying that Ronaldo (thinks he) knows everything. Did that mean that Ronaldo was refusing to listen to Mourinho's instructions? TSO (The Special One) sat down keeper Iker Casillas thus creating controversy but he most certainly would have been in a tough spot if he sat down the person many believe is the world's best player if not 2nd to Lionel Messi.

It's all apples and oranges but Mata's accomplishments are strong for a young 25 year-old player who is developing into becoming a major catalyst force on a team. He's a member of the world's best national team. His current career totals include for clubs 89 GOALS in 348 appearances and 9 goals in 30 appearances for Spain's national team.

His credits also include:

# Chelsea Player of the Year (2): 2011-12, 2012-13

# FA Cup Final Man of the Match: 2012

# Premier League Player of the Month (1): October 2012

# Premier League PFA Team of the Year (1): 2012-13 On April 19, 2013 Mata was nominated for PFA Players' Player of the Year in recognition of his contribution to Chelsea's season in all competitions. The PFA's decision was based on his "ability to not only create goals but also score them himself" and saw him nominated alongside teammate Eden Hazard.

On 15 May, Mata gave a fine performance in the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final against Portugal's Benfica, assisting Branislav Ivanovic's injury time winner from a corner kick.[68] The next day, he was awarded Chelsea's Player's Player of the Year award.

On 15 May 2013, Mata won the UEFA Europa League, joining teammate Fernando Torres to become the first players to have held all four of the Champions League, Europa League, World Cup, and the European Championships simultaneously. In addition, he also had the Under-21 Football Championship at that time.

On May 10, 2011 Mata was rewarded for his consistent form throughout his first Chelsea season by the fans voting him the club's Player of the Year, following on from Chelsea legends such as Dennis Wise and Gianfranco Zola, whom he had been compared to on various occasions. Now the question is can Mata make a difference and be the glue to bring the Man U squad together? Will it be a Mata of fact? Stay tuned…
