Entertainment Biz - TV Guide Channel's Emmy Award Picks - August 2006

Tuesday August 22, 2006

Hosts of TV Guide Channel's 'SQUARE OFF' Reveal Their 2006 Emmy Award Picks and Predictions Special Emmy Themed Episode of 'SQUARE OFF' to Premiere Saturday, August 26 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT

In anticipation of the 58th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, August 27, 2006, Brian Lowry (Chief TV Critic, Daily Variety) and Andrew Wallenstein (TV Features Editor, The Hollywood Reporter), hosts of TV Guide Channel SQUARE OFF, unveiled their picks and predictions on the shows and actors that will take top honors on TV's most prestigious night.

SQUARE OFF on TV Guide Channel is a one-hour talk show that takes an inside look at the TV industry with lively debates between Lowry and Wallenstein, along with up-close interviews featuring the "who's who" of television - both in front of and behind the camera.

A special Emmy-themed episode of SQUARE OFF will premiere on Saturday, August 26 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

For this year's Emmy Awards, both SQUARE OFF hosts agree that while "Grey's Anatomy" is the likely winner for Best Drama, the award should go to HBO's "The Sopranos."

In the Best Comedy category, the critics are divided with Lowry choosing "The Office" and Wallenstein selecting "Two and a Half Men," as the shows that should win the award.

However, neither believes their picks will actually take home the statue in the Best Comedy category - Lowry predicts that "Arrested Development" will win, while Wallenstein believes "Curb Your Enthusiasm" will take home the honor.

Lowry believes that there is a three-way tie for the biggest oversight in this year's Emmy nominations: "Lost" for Best Drama; Edie Falco ("The Sopranos") for lead actress in a drama; and Hugh Laurie ("House") for lead actor in a drama.

Created by Peter Bart (Editor-in-Chief of Variety), Peter Guber (Chairman/CEO of Mandalay Entertainment Group) and producer Scott Sternberg (Emmy-Award winner and President of Scott Sternberg Productions), SQUARE OFF features the entertainment industry's top power players, including actors, agents, managers, network executives, producers, directors, television critics and reporters.

Just like the genre it celebrates and investigates, SQUARE OFF offers a rapid fire, responsive and timely discussion of the state of TV today. New weekly episodes of SQUARE OFF will premiere every Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT throughout 2006.
