BLOOMBERG TV ROCKS IN HOLIDAYS

Ho ho, ho the fat man in the red suite said as he slid down the chimney. What you want for Christmas doesn't matter as Bloomberg TV's Game Changers program is giving you a repeat of their features of Harry Potter creator/author JK Rowling and editor-in-chief of American Vogue Anna WIntour. This will be the third time in eight weeks that the Wintour episode will are on the program.

Wintour kicks the program off with 30 minutes exploring her growth in the publishing business. After studying fashion design she started out at the lower end of the business and worked her way to the top with a no holds bared attitude. In 1970, when Harper's Bazaar UK merged with Queen to become Harper's & Queen, Wintour was hired as one of its first editorial assistants, beginning her career in fashion journalism. She told her co-workers that she wanted to edit Vogue. While there, she discovered model Annabel Hodin, a former North London classmate. In time Winotur's wishes materialized.

Wintour took jobs as an editor for various magazines that never panned out including her first position as a fashion editor, at Viva, a women's adult magazine started by Kathy Keeton, then wife of Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione. Wintour was an innovator and went against the grain by using celebrities for the covers of her publications.

"Anna saw the celebrity thing coming before everyone else did", Grace Coddington said three decades later. A former colleague arranged for an interview with Vogue editor Grace Mirabella that ended when Wintour told Mirabella she wanted her job.

Wintour took the position as editor of the British Vogue but later returned to the US to do what she set out to do in taking Mirabella's job. Along the way she experienced a divorce. Mirabella felt that she was being set up to fail with Wintour being the devils disciple.

Wintour is depicted as being somewhat of a tyrant with her micro management hands on style. She is so demanding that a former employee wrote a book turned film The Devil Wears Prada staring Meryl Streep which is believed to be based on Wintour's behavior.

In the end Wintour is depicted as a major success story resulting from her talent in having an eye for fashion and a dedicated work ethic.

The JK Rowling piece shows how Rowling's love for writing presented hardships on her road success. She couldn't hold down a job and had a hard time paying the rent and eating.

In 1990 at the age of 25, while she was on a four-hour-delayed train trip from Manchester to London, the idea for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry "came fully formed" into her mind. She told The Boston Globe that "I really don't know where the idea came from. It started with Harry, then all these characters and situations came flooding into my head." When she had reached her Clapham Junction flat, she began to write immediately.

Her mother passed away and that stunted her writing for a while but she continued to pursue her dream the problem was to earn a living until her dreams were realized. The priority was to obtain a job.

In order to teach in Scotland she would need a postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE), requiring a full-time, yearlong course of study. She began this course in August 1995, after completing her first novel while having survived on state welfare support. She wrote in many cafés, especially Nicolson's Café, wherever she could get her daughter Jessica to fall asleep.

In a 2001 BBC interview, Rowling denied the rumor that she wrote in local cafés to escape from her unheated flat, remarking, "I am not stupid enough to rent an unheated flat in Edinburgh in midwinter. It had heating." Instead, as she stated on the American TV program A&E Biography, one of the reasons she wrote in cafés was because taking her baby out for a walk was the best way to make her fall asleep.

Rowling's Harry Potter went on to become a major success but publishers turned it down for over a year. She gleefully accepted a 1500 pound advance which became the beginning of her success. Soon after, in 1997, Rowling received an £8000 grant from the Scottish Arts Council to enable her to continue writing. The following spring, an auction was held in the United States for the rights to publish the novel, and was won by Scholastic Inc., for $105,000. Rowling has said she "nearly died" when she heard the news.

After the book became a top seller Rowling turned down numerous offers to use the Potter name for various products. Eventually a movie deal came along with Warner Brothers and she took it but maintained total control of who it was made. She insisted on British actors.

In October 1998, Warner Bros. purchased the film rights to the first two novels for a seven-figure sum. A film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released on 16 November 2001, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on 15 November 2002. The first Potter film was the biggest grossing domestic film in America that year.

From rags to riches Rowling is worth $1 billion and lives on a large estate in England. Harry Potter is now a global brand worth an estimated £7 billion ($15 billion), and the last four Harry Potter books have consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history. The series, totaling 4,195 pages, has been translated, in whole or in part, into 65 languages. JK didn't let obstacles get in her way on her road to success she just kept ROWLING ALONG.
