MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Oliver Stones three films relating to the American/Vietnam War were a product of his experience. Stone served time in the war as a member of the US armed forces. He enlisted in the United States Army in September 1967 and requested combat duty in Vietnam. The then 21-year-old served a 15 month tour in which he was with 25th Infantry Division and then with the First Cavalry and was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917 with the U.S. military. It is the oldest award that is still given to members of the U.S. military. The Oak Leaf Cluster is awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service, heroic deeds, or valorous actions.

When Stone spoke to college students in Phnom Penh in January 2010 he noted that when he was young the emphasis of American patriotism was to fight against communism and that he bought in to it. He added that now the emphasis for war is to fight terrorism. The inference was the message stimulated the fear factor in Americans to fight for a certain cause.

During Stones Vietnam duty he witnessed numerous atrocities by American soldiers towards the Vietnam people. Many of those memories are captured in his films Platoon, Born on the 4th of July and Heaven & Earth. Heaven & Earth is his favorite but admitted that it failed at the box office.

Platoon is a semi-autobiographical film about Stone's experience in combat. Born on the Fourth of July is based on the autobiography of Ron Kovic. Heaven & Earth is derived from the memoir When Heaven and Earth Changed Places, the true story of Le Ly Hayslip, a Vietnamese girl whose life is drastically affected by the war. During Stone's war experience he was exposed to it all.

Heaven & Earth's released December 25, 1993 budget was $33 million but earned only $5,864,949 in gross revenue. Born on the Fourth of July released December 20, 1989 was the top earner. Its budget was $14 million and took in $161,001,698 in gross revenue. Platoon released December 19, 1986 followed with a budget of $6,500,000 and earned $138,530,565 in gross revenue.

PROGRAMMING TIME CHANGES

As the lyrics to a song the band Chicago sang, "I didn't know what time it was," and that certainly applies this time of the year with TV telecasts. In the USA this past week it became standard time when their time clocks are advanced an hour with the result being that the Larry King show is now airing at 5 PM in the Thailand/Cambodia time zones as well as an hour later in those Asian countries that do not observe the daylight savings time (explanation below).

What is Daylight Saving Time 2010?

Daylight Saving Time begins in the spring, when you set your clocks ahead one hour. It ends in the fall, when you set your clocks back to standard time. In the US, you are notified in the news media when these changes occur. There is no federal law that states must abide by these changes, and some locations in the US choose not to. But if a state does choose to follow DST they must follow these guidelines:

In the US (and Canada) Daylight Saving Time (Starting in 2007) is observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. In 2010 This means that, on March 14, 2010, at 2:00 a.m. - you had to set the clocks ahead one hour. (Spring forward) And on Sunday, November 7, 2010, at 2:00 a.m. - you set the clocks back an hour.

(Fall back) Daylight Saving Time in Europe Most countries in Europe, via the EU - European Union - follow a synchronized DST that lasts from the last Sunday of March until the last Sunday of October.

The following DST schedule for 2010 applies to most countries in Europe * DST starts annually at 1 a.m. (01:00) UTC on the last Sunday of March (in 2010, this was March 28). * DST ends at 1 a.m. (01:00) UTC on the last Sunday of October each year (in 2010, this is October 31).

Note: Iceland does not observe DST.
