THE DECAY OF LAS VEGAS

The value of homes in Las Vegas declines every day. In part it reflects America's political problems when Wall Street banking gangsters that bilked the public out of their money by investing in derivatives as depicted in the documentary film Inside Job weren't prosecuted and jailed.

The result being the Wall Street gangsters committed a crime without punishment are free to continue to deceive the public with their scams while the victim home owners who were paying outrageous mortgagees on houses lost both their jobs and residence. The ripple effect was a global financial crisis in 2008 costing over $20 trillion in losses and many, in this case Vegas residents went homeless while others committed suicide.

This is the non intended repugnant background to the TV series Flipping Vegas which focuses on resurrecting properties that are the results of a corrupt political system and suffering of disenchanted US citizens as well as citizens and bankrupt countries around the world.

After homeowners lost their jobs and were unable to pay their mortgages their houses were repossessed by the disreputable banks. Many of the vacant properties were trashed by their angry previous owners while others were damaged by squatters or invaders.

This unfortunate situation enabled a program like Flipping Vegas to be conceived. The show originally aired on the A & E channel in America. Currently it is being televised in East Asia on the BIO channel.

The ripple effect was a global financial crisis in 2008 costing over $20 trillion in financial losses and many (in this case Vegas) residents went homeless while others committed suicide. .

Married couple Scott and Amie Yancey are the protagonists on the Flipping Vegas. Scott, a tough-talking, risk-taking, house flipper (buys & sells) who gambles on homes no one else wants. His strong commitment to getting the job done has helped him win big in the Vegas real estate industry. In the process he isn't a warm fuzzy personality but has an acrid personality in his communications to those he works with.

Flipping Vegas follows Scott and his interior designer wife Amie around throughout the refurbishing process. Amie often draws her husbands ire by purchasing expensive materials taking the project over budget. Her mischievous interplay with her husband is the most humorous aspect of the show. The program also includes a host of project managers and good-looking real estate agents as they work to breathe new life into the run down properties. Despite the roadblocks, conflicts and the drama Scott always finishes what he starts leaving behind an attractive refurbished home that is intended to excite potential buyers while most importantly stuffing a profit in his pocket. His costly vices include racing expensive cars and gambling thus the money earned comes in handy.

When Scott takes on a project he hires contractors to do the work and dictates a budget that they must meet within a very limited period of time (usually a week) to be ready for an open house to show to the public for sale. Conflicts always arise. During the episodes that have previously aired in Asia he has dealt with several contractors and a brother team as partners. Often there is conflict as his overbearing personality fails in the likeability factor.

What makes this show interesting is not the intended content of flipping homes for profit but to see what the once glamorous Las Vegas was back in the day to what it has become, a city in ruin and crime. The irony is the city did flourish when the Mafia ran it and started to decay when Howard Hughes and his Suma Corporation began purchasing hotel casinos in the metropolis. The FBI then came in to clean up Vegas by arresting and convicting the Mafia chiefs that owned and operated the casinos. That was the beginning of the end of the glamorous period of the gambling heaven. During the Mafia period an individual was not permitted to enter a casino if they failed to wear a sport jacket or suit. During the post FBI now corporate phase Vegas has been decaying and the quality of residents and visitors it attracts has degenerated.

This properties featured in Flipping Vegas are a result of individuals and families that came to the sin city for work and fortune and eventually lost everything during that 2008 financial crisis created by the corrupt banks and Wall Street derivatives rip off. Since then that misconduct has expanded to bringing world's economic system down to its knees and could be recognized as an international crime. That is the framework which brought about the conditions to make this show possible.

The most interesting aspect of this program is clearing the mystery of what goes on behind the scenes in the city for those who have never been their and particularly those who have as the changes are horrific. When Scott and Amie tear a house apart one can see how cheaply the homes were initially built.

The hope, greed and migration that helped the town grow was exacerbated by how the US government abandoned its citizens in favor of supporting crooked big business and unscrupulous Wall Street non convicted banking gangsters. Compounding the problem is the high rolling gamblers have eliminated Vegas as their gaming destination of choice for the newer greener Asian attractions of Macao and Singapore.

This show took a while for us to find interesting as Scott's personality we found too abrasive and annoying. Once we got past the erratic human behavior and focused on the Vegas environment we found that Flipping Vegas is an interesting watch.
