Miss Cambodia Contest

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and in Southeast Asia that is particularly important since much of the programming that is interesting is not in English.

Though a viewer may not speak the language what most notably stands out is a performers talent. The quality of voice, expression, timing and rhythm are always easy to identify with.

According to Noy Rauv, the president of Planet Communications one of the producers of Cambodia's Freshie Boy & Girl contest and TV show will be producing the Miss Cambodia contest.

Entrants must be 18-24 years of age. The winner will be entered in the 2007 Ms Universe contest. The Ms Cambodia contest will be televised.

Donald Trump is known for many things. For TV viewers he is the host of The Apprentice show. Trump is also the executive producer of the Miss Universe contest.

The reality is that television is not Trumps forte. He made his millions in the real estate business that as he says he loves. One of his most recent projects is building condominiums in Hawaii.

ABS-CBN - ASAP - GERONIMO

The ASAP variety show on the Philippine network ABS-CBN is enjoyable viewing that has volumes of talent. It is a showcase of the networks talent many of whom had their initial exposure on the networks talent shows and Big Brother shows of which there were three.

Many of the participants have been developed and placed on other television shows on the network.

Sarah GeronImo is one of the networks most outstanding talents. The recently turned 18-year-old is featured on a TV show a well as ASAP. She also has a successful singing career.

Geronimo has an upcoming tour in the US in August with stops in San Diego, Los Angeles, Hanford and San Francisco California. She l also is scheduled to appear in Seattle, Washington; Anchorage, Alaska; Chicago, Illinois as well as Honolulu and Maui Hawaii.

The ABS-CBN network is currently seeking those who have Philippine ancestry for their Big Brother program scheduled to begin in March of 2007.

Audition schedules world wide for August are:Aug 5 - San Francisco, USA and Aug 11 - Tokoyo, Japan.

Applicants have to be 20-35 years old, may currently live in another country but if accepted they must commit to being on the show from March to June 2007. For more detailed information go to their website - www.pinoybigbrother.com

For those that qualify this could be the beginning of a TV & recording career in the Philippines.

ANGELINA JOLIE'S DAD

From my point of view I thought Angelina Jolie was a major talent after I reviewed her HBO TV film Gia.

When I found out that her father was famed actor Jon Voight I asked her the question how did her father influence her in her work. She wasn't that receptive to the inquiry. It was later disclosed that she was from a broken home.

In 1999 Jolie wasn't that well known in Asia. When I asked a Thai college student that was very astute to the entertainment happenings in America she didn't know who Jolie was. This was after the student had won a contest to go on tour with Britney Spears.

A few months later GIA was televised on HBO in Thailand and the student then knew what I was talking about and became a big Joile fan.

The interesting thing about interviewing the youth of Southeast Asia regarding their preferences and influences they derive from films and music from western cultures is usually they don't know the names of the talent or the names of the songs or films they enjoy. They can tell you what they like about the product.

When they are informed about Joile's father's talents and film success they are surprised.

It's not surprising since when I'm in another country for the most part I'm not familiar with their entertainment stars.

But Voight has achieved success that Jolie has never approached. He has won the Oscar (Academy Award). That is the highest award in the world for acting that is selected by his peers (other actors). Voight won the Oscar for best actor in 1978 for "Coming Home,"

He has also won three Golden Globes an award that is selected by members of the International press.

Jolie also won an Oscar for her role in "Girl Interrupted,"

There is a link for the TV viewers in the Southeast Asia region to Jolie's father. In Jolie's case they remembered her from Tomb Raider (2001). There is something about Jolie's sexy image in the film that resonates in their minds. What the youth of Asia don't know is that Voight played the part of Jolie's father in the film.

Asian youth do relate to film stars from the west that are recording stars. They know Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith from their music.

Voight co-stared with Lopez in Anaconda (1997) and Smith in Ali (2002) when with heavy make-up he played the part of sportscaster Howard Cossell

Both motion pictures have been televised in the Southeast Asian region where. Lopez and Smith the film are well known.

Nicholas Cage is a recognized star in the region primarily from his film the Rock. Voight appeared with Cage in the film National Treasure (2004) that is also beig televised in the Asian region.

Voight plays Cage's father. It's a good film about stealing the USA's Declaration of Independence in order to find an ancient hidden treasure.

Some other of Jolie's father's movies are now being televised in Southeast Asia one being. Midnight Cowboy a film that brought his acting talents into the limelight. .

Among Voight's other most notable credits are the films Coming Home (1978), and The Manchurian Candidate (2004).

Deliverance is also one of his most famous films but is not being televised in the region at this time. To see that Voight film check out your video stores.

When you see these films you will have a better understanding of where the seeds of Joile's talent comes from.

DID YOU KNOW? SUPERMAN

The new Superman film is currently out but did you know that Dean Cain the host of Ripley's Believe It or Not played the part of Superman on the USA's ABC television series Lois & Clark.

For those that don't know Superman posed a reporter Clark Kent when he was undercover and wore a suite with his Superman outfit underneath. Lois Lane was a reporter at the same newspaper and to some extent Kent's sweetheart.
