On being featured in "The Making of a Footballer" exhibition at FIFA Museum - In the exhibition you are featured alongside some of football's greatest like Pelé, Paolo Maldini and Iker Casillas

Zurich - (FIFA NEWS)

Friday June 14, 2024

Join Harry Kane as he reflects on his involvement in the FIFA Museum's new special exhibition, "The Making of a Footballer: Photographs of Youthful Dreams." Since its debut in the beginning of May, the special exhibition in Zurich has captivated audiences with its intimate portrayal of the personal journeys of football legends, including Bayern Munich's prolific striker.

The FIFA Museum's new special exhibition that was developed with assistance from FIFA Chief of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger and more than 20 players tells the stories of these players through a compelling collection of photographs that chronicle the transformation of aspiring youngsters into the legendary players they have become. Among them is also England's all-time highest goalscorer Harry Kane who tells his personal story from youth club to international stardom.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the FIFA Museum and Harry Kane are pleased to present an exclusive interview, where the England captain shares personal insights and reflections on his involvement in the exhibition and his own journey and the obstacles he had to overcome:

In "The Making of a Footballer", your journey from aspiring youngster to England's all-time highest goal scorer is celebrated. How does it feel to have your story told at such an institution?

Harry Kane: It's a truly incredible feeling to have my story told here, at such a prestigious institution. It's humbling to be recognized alongside footballing greats. Becoming England's all-time top scorer is a dream I never dared to imagine as a kid kicking a ball around in the park. It's an unbelievable feeling. And for me, the story isn't over yet. There are more goals to score, more matches to win, and hopefully, more silverware to bring home.

In the exhibition you are featured alongside some of football's greatest like Pelé, Paolo Maldini and Iker Casillas. What does it mean to you to share your story alongside such legends?

Harry Kane: I'm honoured to be part of this exhibition alongside some of the true greats of football like Pelé, Paolo Maldini and Iker Casillas. These are legends who I grew up watching and admiring; to have my story included alongside theirs and the other players who are featured is incredibly humbling. It's a recognition of the hard work and dedication I've poured into this sport, but more importantly, it serves as a huge source of motivation. This exhibition is a chance to share our collective love for the sport and inspire the next generation. It's a privilege to be a part of it.

Reflecting on your childhood dreams of becoming a professional footballer, what were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?

Harry Kane: Early on in my career, I really felt that I was ready to push on, play at a high level and come onto the scene. But it didn't happen like that. It was the first time I struggled to get into the team. It was tough being on the bench. My dad's advice was to work even harder, and we'll get there, and that's the kind of approach I took. That was all part of my football journey that led me to where I am today.

The incredible support I've received throughout my career from family, teammates, coaches, and amazing fans has been crucial. They've constantly pushed me to improve, never give up, and keep chasing my goals.

Without a doubt your story will inspire countless visitors. What advice would you give to those who are working hard to pursue their dreams, especially in the face of obstacles?

Harry Kane: I hope this exhibition inspires others to chase their dreams with passion and dedication. There will be setbacks, there will be tough times, but if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. Seeing my journey here, I hope it shows that hard work and dedication can truly pay off.

Arsène Wenger's four pillars of development (Technique, Physicality, Tactics and Mentality) are a core element of the exhibition. Which elements have been the most important in your journey to become the player you are today?

Harry Kane: The most important elements for me are hard work, self-belief, and dedication. I think these have helped me become the player I am today.

The exhibition emphasizes the importance of resilience and determination in achieving one's goals. Can you share a personal mantra or mindset that has helped guide you through your footballing journey?

Harry Kane: To be the best I can be and not to let myself and my family down. I try to keep a level head. I think you have to enjoy your football, and if you are not smiling, you won't be playing that well. But also when it comes to competition-you want to win. I'm a winner, and that's the case no matter what I'm doing. Whether it's on the pitch or if I'm playing a game of chess with my teammates, I always want to win. That mode always sets in no matter what I'm doing.

Your recent establishment of the Harry Kane Foundation, with a focus on transforming our generation's thinking of mental health, is truly commendable. Can you share how your personal journey intertwines with the mission of your foundation, particularly in addressing the stigma surrounding mental health?

Harry Kane: Thank you. I launched the Harry Kane Foundation with a long-term goal to help transform a generation's thinking about mental health. I've seen the pressures of professional sports and it's clear that mental wellbeing is just as crucial as physical fitness for peak performance.

Looking back on my own journey, there have definitely been moments of challenge and setbacks. That's why, my foundation encourages people to build positive habits that strengthens mental resilience and emotional wellbeing. We also want to break down the stigma around talking about mental health. By showing that everyone faces challenges, and that seeking help is a sign of strength, we can create a more open and accepting generation.
