NR TOP 10 - August 2013 - Part 2 - ARCHIVES, Sections Most Visited, & TOP PRESS RELEASES

James Loving - National Radio Text Service

This month we are separating out NR TOP 10 listings. Archives, Sections Most Visited and Top Press releases are included on this page. This month Archives are a surprise as stories that were popular 10 and 15 years ago were retrieved at such a rate they almost qualified to be in the current NR TOP 10 ratings. Our Press Release ratings have proved to be so popular that reports on the topic may be expanded - NR TOP 10 Part 1 - POLITICS RULE NR TOP 10

ARCHIVES

Another shocker in this months ratings are three stories that were in the NR TOP 10 almost every month for three years. We noted content movement since our launch in 1997 and published our first edition of NR TOP 10 Stories from January through March 2006.

The strongest of those during that early period was our feature on the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jim Murray whose story commanded the number one spot the majority of those three years. Murray was a true journalist that let his writing do the talking and in 10 years I never saw him take a drink an alcoholic beverage which seems to be the badge of professionalism of the new breed of those that now think of themselves as being journalists.

What is interesting to me is after seeing me around everywhere he sat down and interviewed me at the Rose Bowl football game. He approached it in an investigative, curious sort of way by wanting to know the who, where and what I was about. I knew who he was but not that he was one of the first reporters to start Sports Illustrated Magazine. This experience will always be remembered because he was a true journalist and not one to talk about it. Murray lived in a JUST DO IT WORLD. His passing was what prompted me to reflect and articulate what he represented to me on a professional level. The story was hot and got around like wild fire which eventually led to it being referred to his wife Linda who contacted me as she was involved in the piece.

Murray was not insecure and one that needed the attention of other so called journalists, he was all business and somewhat of a loner that had no time for idle gossip or chatter. Being a part of a talkative journalist's rat pack was not his thing as he had too much work to do on his stories and gathering information. That's what impressed me about his style as he didn't waste his time on things that didn't matter yet he was interested enough in me a rookie sports producer/reporter, to spend roughly a half and hour exchanging our perspectives on journalism without being invasive but in a friendly manner. In that respect he was a role model as he stood out among the younger, think they have it all figured out and know it all breed of journalist want 2-B's.

The Royal Palace feature was also a standout as over the three years it never made it to the number one spot but notched 3rd almost every month. The 2nd spot was its highest ranking. This story stands out as I had to put it together from scratch as there was nothing on the Internet or any English publications that made any reference to it. As it turns out it provided information that others stole or used as reference as that was revealed when we searched our listings.

Another story that had the same effect was on Cambodian footballer Hok Sochetra. We put that together by interviewing him, traveling with the team and the help of then national team coach Joachim Fickert. Fickert searched through the records to come up with statistics as the Cambodian Football Federation failed to keep organized reports.

What is as strange as the political interest of our content is why these stories have charged back on to the charts at this time after several years following when they were hot topics. These stories were so old that we lost the links but found them in one of our first NR TOP 10 ratings from May 2007. GO FIGURE.

SECTIONS MOST VISITED

China roared to the top spot without business being the latest impact subject. Interest in NBA games in China was the latest momentum for the upward movement. Business, Internet Technology (BIT), Soccer and Features are the new entries on the Sections Most Visited ratings. After being off the charts for a month Business made the greatest impact in notching the 2nd position. BIT was 2nd grabbing the 5th spot followed by Soccer 6th and Features 10th.

We've haven't published any stories on soccer since April when we uploaded MAKE LOVE & PLAY FOOTBALL NOT WAR that spotlighted the Afghan women's football league team. Overall there was a tremendous interest in business topics in the searches with travel being the subject gaining the most attention.

TOP PR

Travel again was the most searched theme in press releases throughout TOP 50 sampling. However in the top of the crop 5 pure business and political related matters were the most read. Of those technology took three of the Top 5 which explains the BIT Section being so highly rated. That included 2014 International CES Registration, Schwab Intelligent Technologies and Samsung Launches ATIV Smart PC Pro.

Politically speaking Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to Host Program was a highly rated issue while Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to Host Program was pure business.

Other hot releases that failed to make the Top 10 were Hyatt Regency Amsterdam to Open in 2015, Omni Hotels & Resorts to Acquire and Operate Five Iconic Resorts, Deborah Turness Named President of NBC News, AEG & Tim Leiweke??? The David Beckham Connection, FOX News Channel Signs Former Presidential Candidate Herman Cain to Contributor Role, IT&CM China 2012 and NTT America Recognized for Leadership, Green Initiatives and CSR Activities.

2. Schwab Intelligent Technologies Expands Envestnet

3. Time Warner Inc. Announces Plan to Separate Time Inc.
