The Simon Cowell Sanjaya War Is Over - America Voted Sanjaya Out

For weeks it seemed as if there was a war going on between American Idol judge Simon Cowell and contestant Sanjaya Malakar that was beyond logic. Sanjaya seemed to be America's sweetheart as he mesmerized the television audience and escaped being eliminated.

Famed singer Diana Ross who was a vocal coach on one of the previous American Idol shows said after meeting Sanjaya, "Sanjaya to me is love."

Jennifer Lopez also an AI coach said after she coached Sanjaya, "I like Sanjaya…. I love Sanjaya."

Another AI coach and famed recording star Tony Bennett said of Snajaya, "He dares to be different."

Some of the shows viewers thought that Sanjaya was cute and had talent while others thought he had no talent at all and wasn't worthy of being on the show.

The media hysteria reached the point where Howard Stern an American radio shock jock host asked his listening audience to vote for the seventeen-year-old.

For several weeks American Idol host Ryan Seacrest of asked Cowell if he had a personal problem with Sanjaya. Cowell's response was that he didn't and was simply voicing his negative opinion based on that he felt the singer lacked talent.

The back and forth between Seacrest and Cowell went on for weeks but it all came to a head in the most recent edition of the show when after Sanjaya sang a country song titled "Something to Talk About" that Cowell commented that it was "AS BAD AS ANYTHING WE'VE EVER SEEN ON AMERICAN IDOL SINCE WE STARTED."

Seacrest seemed shocked by the acrid comment and shot back at Cowell raising the point that whatever Sanjaya did that Cowell would have a negative response.

Cowell abruptly replied that he gave a positive comment on Sanjaya's performance the previous week and suggested that Seacrest pay attention to what's going on with the show.

Throughout the battle of words Sanjaya stood on stage next to Seacrest and looked stunned and embarrassed. That apparently was all she wrote for Sanjaya as after the show America had its chance to voice their opinion.

The following day when they televised the elimination show Seacrest separated the seven contestants into two groups of three and asked Melinda Doolittle to stand next to him in the center of the stage while noting that she was safe.

On their right were Snajaya, Blake Lewis and surprisingly Lakisha Jones who was previously voted as being on of the top three singers on the show by the AI viewers just a couple of weeks ago. The other two were Jordin Sparks and Doolittle.

On their left were Phil Stacy who has been a regular member of the bottom three, Sparks and Chris Richardson who also has been in the bottom three in the past and was one step away from being voted off the show.

Seacrest then revealed that Stacy, Sparks and Richardson were safe. At that point a GIANT SMILE came across Cowell's face and the camera showed him grinning from ear to ear. When asked why he appeared to be so happy Cowell noted that he felt something coming on.

Seacrest then announced that Lewis was safe. It was then down to Jones and Sanjaya.

You could see and feel the tension mount from the two singers and among the television audience. The usual smile on Sanjaya's face disappeared as it seemed that he realized that he might not bet America's darling any more.

Jones looked worried and as if her American Idol dream was fading away before her very eyes in front of millions of television viewers around the world. This would be the final bow for one of them as it was time to see who the record setting 38 million voters for the final seven chose to go home.

Seacrest then looked Sanjaya in the eyes and said those fatal words…., "Sanjaya you are going home,"

Well if you were looking for a happy camper he was sitting next to Paula Abdul in the judges seats…his name is Simon Cowell.

As tears rolled down Sanjaya's face he sang his last song on the show, "Something To Talk About."

The drama was over as the curtain closed on Sanjaya's American Idol experience and for certain he did give the world something to talk about.

IS COUNTRY (MUSIC) COOL OR NOT?

A few weeks ago we mentioned how difficult a transition it is for a country singer to sing a soul song and visa versa. Well this week's show will be exactly that test as the American Idol contestants will have to sing a country song.

Lakisha Jones suffered that fate as she "Jesus Take The Wheel." Being a soul singer in the vein of Aretha Franklin her performance drew the following comments from the judges.

Randy Jackson said, "Pitch problems in the beginning. You could have made it more gospel." Paula Abdul said, ""I agree," and also pointed out that it sounded as if Jones was shouting. Simon (SAYS) said, "You and that song didn't go together," and that it was like having hamburger for breakfast that it didn't go together. "Felt like it didn't have a natural soul to it."

This is a case of being damned if you do and damned if you don't

NOTES

Last week we said: Knowing Sanjaya and his attention getting antics that goatee will disappear by the next show and he will have a NEW LOOK to capture the American Idol fans imagination.

We were spot on as on his last show Sanjaya was clean shaven.

COWELL DEFENSE

The criticism targeted towards Simon Cowell helps make American Idol interesting. Cowell is the straw that stirs the American Idol drink. The seeming disagreements between Cowell and judges Jackson and Abdul and host Ryan Seacrest make the show more interesting. It makes for good television.

As Sanjaya sang it gives all of us viewers and journalists SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT.

Their chemistry is the cog that drives the wheel of America Idol success. Contestants come and go but the judges and host remain to give the show spice.

Cowell's opinion of Sanjaya is warranted though perhaps too bitter but that's Simon Cowell.

Sanjaya gave the worst performance of all the contestants the night he was eliminated. Overall since his audition he has not been progressing. As the weeks went on he seemed to get caught up in the Hollyweird bullshit.

For a young impressionable teenager that is easy to do and that is one of the major factors in a talents success. The point being that a performer must continue to work on their skills and focus on improving their talent rather than getting involved too much in the Hollyweird goings on.

Sanjaya seemed to be focused on style and not enough on substance. In his last show he flirted with the camera, the background singers on stage and the audience. That's not saying it's a bad thing but it should not be his focus.

He has talent and fan appeal. That can work for him for continued success. His voice doesn't have to be great to be successful. There have been many singers in the past that have had huge careers without having huge voices.

Sanjaya has the skills to be an actor, recording artist and stage performer. There are millions of teens that would purchase his work.

In this case his elimination was warranted. His singing talent is not better than the six remaining contestants. It's up to him to prove Simon Cowell wrong and do a Jennifer Hudson on him and rise to the challenge and be successful

DID YOU KNOW???

Sanjaya, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis all audition for the American Idol show in Seattle, Washington. That translates to three of the final seven auditioned in the rainy city.

When you think of the thousands for auditions done throughout America there must be some magic in Seattle... or is something in the Seattle water?
