Friday, January 24, 2020

A sex scandal has tarnished the 62nd Grammy Awards. Not since Whitney Houston committed an apparent suicide following partying at the awards show hotel days prior to the event has such a controversy damaged the event. The current controversy involves Neil Portnow the former chairman and CEO of The Recording Academy that present the awards show.

In January 2020, it was revealed that Neil Portnow was accused of raping a foreign recording artist following a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The vocalist is unnamed but the charge resulted in Portnow's contract not being renewed after he was at the helm for 17 years serving as president from 2002. Portnow announced he would step down as President of the Recording Academy on July 31, 2019 after his contract was up.

Deborah Dugan who replaced him but she came under fire and was terminated just days prior to the awards telecast. Employees complained that she too heavy handed in her management style. She in turn than accused an Academy lawyers of making sexual advances towards her.

In a hasty move the Academy then appointed musician/record producer Harvey Jay Mason Jr. Among his long list of credits his Harvey Mason Media produced the feature film More than a Game in 2008. This inspirational movie documents the rise of LeBron James and his high school teammates from their early AAU basketball days to the high school national championship stage.
