As this Russian, Ukraine nonsense continues one of the fallouts is the RT television show selections have now been educed to three. As we mentioned in our previous column Worlds Apart and Crosstalk remain being produced.

A guess is that prior to the number of English language programs that previously aired was about 16.

There is a self titled Interview show which mostly features Russian government politicians as guests. This is not a regularly scheduled program. Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs is the most recent interview.

A show titled Documentary is merely a preview of what appears on the channel. Since the Internet is the only access to RT this show is insignificant.

Crosstalk is hosted by a 59-year-old American Peter Lavelle who has been living in Eastern Europe and Russia for over 30 years while working as a lecturer at the University of Warsaw, a market researcher for Colgate-Palmolive, and an investment analyst for brokerage firms, including Russia's Alfa-Bank. In Lavelle settled in Russia.

The New York Times has reported that Lavelle was previously a stringer for United Press International's Moscow bureau and has contributed to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Lavelle was also the author of Untimely Thoughts, an electronic newsletter.

Lavelle is very critical of the US government. He usually has two or three guests that voice their opinions on a selected topic of the day.

All of the shows that were hosted by other Americans have been eliminated OR… the shows opted not to provide programming to RT.

American comedian Dennis Miller has been off the air since the Russian, Ukraine conflict began. Former Minnesota governor Jessie Ventura and his son had separate shows on RT that are no longer on the channel.

The most interesting aspect of the surviving shows is the tone has changed. Since March the most prevailing attitude was defending Russia's position that they are protecting their borders from the Ukraine that has been receiving donated arms from Western nations since early December 2001. There is now a more sensitive posture of the Western nation's assertive narrative that Russia is to blame for everything that is going wrong.

The issue of food and grain shortages would hurt the west, not Russia was discussed therefore what was this war supposed to be about? Basically the remaining journalists have a clearer vision of the events than those that planned a war and applied sanctions.

In the most recent Crosstalk show they discussed how the fuel and energy shortages were affecting the west and European Union nations. They pointed out that the west accuses Russia of using fuel and gas as a weapon. The irony is the accusers do not see their sanctions as a weapon.

One of our go to shows was Dennis Millers since he had guests from the sports and entertainment industries which we cover. The other was Going Underground that was hosted by a former BBC journalist who is Arab. His perspective and guests was interesting and his guests were intelligent and astute.

Now we view Worlds Apart which is hosted by a Russian lady who is an avid nationalist who steadfastly inserts her opinion while interrupting her guests. We reviewed her in depth in our June column.

What remains of programming is interesting regardless of ones position of the Russian Ukraine conflict. The point is understanding how people think is the reward… to be aware of what and how people think rather than judge.

Who said to listen to all sides and the truth is somewhere in the middle?
