LARRY KING's 2nd Show with The AMERICAN IDOLS

CNN talk show host Larry King did a second show with the American Idol. contestants called the Memorial Day show. Though this was a dull show two things jumped out that were interesting. When King asked if the judges were at time too tough on the contestants Brooke White who finished # 5 in the elimination's said that she felt sometimes the negative criticism works in reverse and may be to the advantage for the person criticized since they might receive support from fans. This theory was noted after winner David Cook was verbally trashed by the judges but the result was he won by 12 million votes of the 97.5 million votes cast taking a 56% to 44% margin over runner-up David Archuleta.

Another interesting observation was Michael Johns who finished eighth was being interviewed from Las Vegas. King asked Johns several times why he was in Vegas to which Johns refused to give an adequate answer. King said he would ask again later in the show but the subject never came up and we the viewing public still don't know why John's was in Las Vegas.

NBA FINALS & Boston Celtics RAY ALLEN - HE GOT GAME

It's on… the NBA playoffs that is... which is, being televised on ESPN and Star television networks in Southeast Asia. The finals with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers renewing their long time playoff rivalry will begin Thursday in the USA but due to Asia's advance time difference is scheduled to be televised on ESPN Friday morning at 9 AM Hong Kong/Singapore - 8 AM Thailand/Cambodia. During the semifinals the games were usually are repeated later in the day at 3 or 3:30 PM and or 9 or 9:30 PM Thai/Cambodia time. When the games are televised from Los Angeles there is a three hour delayed time difference for the ORIGINAL early morning telecast due to the west coast time zone in the USA. The repeat games are usually at the same time as previously noted.

An interesting note for those who enjoy movies but aren't necessarily basketball fans is that Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics is recognized as one of the most accurate 3-point shooters in NBA but he also has a career as an actor. The now 32-year-old Allen had a starring role in the critically acclaimed Spike Lee movie He Got Game which was recently televised here in Southeast Asia. Co-starring with Denzel Washington, he played high school basketball phenomenon "Jesus Shuttlesworth". He also appeared as "Marcus Blake" in the movie Harvard Man in 2001. Allen is nicknamed "Jesus" due to his role as "Jesus Shuttlesworth" in the He Got Game movie.

Allen is an eight-time NBA All-Star and won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the 2000 United States Men's Basketball Team. The third of five children, Allen was born at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. A military child, he spent time growing up in Saxmundham (England), Altus (Oklahoma), Rosamond (California) and Germany. His father was a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force.

THE COMMITMENTS

When it comes to good film with good music you must see The Commitments a BAFTA Winner And Grammy & Oscar Nominated 1991 hit movie. It's a film that has aired several times during the month of May on the MGM channel in Southeast Asia. The film is full of great 60's music. Songs include... Mustang Sally, Chain Of Fools, Try A Little Tenderness, Take Me To The River, In The Midnight Hour ...& many more.

The movie was based on a book The Commitments (1987) a novel by Irish writer Roddy Doyle. The script about a group of unemployed young people in the north side of Dublin, Ireland, who start a soul band, is hilarious. The film, book, and soundtrack were all hugely popular in the 90s with the film being released in 1991. The movie can be categorized as comedy-drama.

For Southeast Asian's it's not only a great way to hear excellent music it's also a cultural study of Western humor with an Irish slant. For laughs and soulful music this is a must see film that is worthy of rental or purchase to put in your video CD library.

As a result of the film a real touring band was formed and two of the touring band members were featured in the movie. Guitarist Kenneth McCluskey played the part of Derek "The Meatman" Scully who was the bass player in the film. Drummer Dick Massey played Billy "The Animal" Mooney the drummer in the movie.

The other current touring band members include Joe Walsh (lead & backing vocals) Karen Coleman & Claire Malone (vocals & backing vocals) Danny Healy (trumpet), Bob Hunt (saxophone), Darragh O'Kelly (keyboards) and Andreas Nolan (bass guitar). The band is currently on tour in Europe and there are plans to tour the United States.
