AMERICAN IDOL MENTOR JIMMY IOVINE IS SPOT ON!

"I would sign her up tonight," said American Idol in house mentor Jimmy Iovine regarding 16-year-old AI contestant Jessica Sanchez. The tiny Latino from San Diego, California with a big voice rocked the house on girl's performance night. Her rendition of Jennifer Hudson's "Love You I Do" was the performance of the week as she projected a talent, voice and confidence seldom EVER seen on the program as she pranced around the stage belting out her song.

Prior to her performance Sanchez required medical treatment for strained vocal chords. Given her overwhelming performance if she can sing like that sick then watch out world this little lady has the potential to be in the Mariah Carey class. She has it all looks, personality, humility, vocal and performance skills. Her strong stage presence was evident when she pranced around the stage with her pulsating version of the song from the film Dream Girls.

At this point of the top 25 she is our choice to win it all as Iovine agreed in saying, "She is the one to beat."

Our second choice Jermaine Jones failed to qualify for the top 24. That decision was a shocking to us as he has the most distinctive and one of the best voices in the contest. He reminds us of Isaac Hayes who had two great albums Hot Buttered Soul and Shaft that had several hits. This is the genre for Jones' voice.

The good news followed and Jones was called back after being in the final elimination in Las Vegas for the top 24. After the top 24 were announced it was revealed that one of four male singers would be called back when the top 24 were selected.

Host Ryan Seacrest refers to the huge 25-year-old as the gentle giant. Jones was an odd fit from the start when he first auditioned in Portland, Oregon on July 2nd. It's never been revealed how tall he is but when he stands next to six foot Shannon Mcgrane plus her heels makes her taller he towers over her and everyone. He appears to be between 6'6"-6'8" with the body of a left tackle in the NFL.

Jones made it to the Hollywood and Las Vegas auditions but was in an odd man out position as he was rejected from all the groups in the group stage rounds. Nobody wanted him in their group. By default he was teamed with another deep voiced singer from Texas who was disliked by many other contestants with his my way or the highway attitude. He alienated himself from everyone.

The strange duo pulled off their act and both advanced to the next round. When the final top 24 decisions was made both were out. Jones was dejected and returned to his home in Pine Hill, New Jersey.

Some time later his mother refused to answer the phone when the Idol staff called to inform him that he was the person selected from the four other eligible contestants to be included in the top 25. His mother refused to answer the phone simply because she didn't recognize the number. Jones pleaded that during times like this she should answer the call. Convinced she then returned the call and her son was on his way back to Hollywood.

On the male performance show after the top 12 sang their songs host Ryan Seacrect set it up with drama as he announced the surprise extra contestant and Jones appeared from behind the curtain to a very enthusiastic audience applause.

Jones sang Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" which was a bit shaky but proved to be well done. The audience went wild and a magnificent smile enveloped Jones' face. After suffering emotionally for several months as a reject BY THE JUDGES only to be chosen by the judges to return and then be selected by the AMERICAN IDOL VOTERS not only being worthy of being in the top 24 but he garnered enough votes to qualify for the top 10 boys & girls. It is a beautiful thing.

"I can listen to an entire album of that voice," said Iovine of Jones. "We have to figure a way how to keep him in this competition (with good selections of songs)," he added.

After the top 10 were announced the other 15 contestants were left to the mercy of the judges who selected six of them to sing again to save their lives as a wild card to continue in the competition to form the top 13. That left the other nine sent packing.

Of the six that sang the results were in their order of performance

1 Jen Hirsh "Oh Darling" (The Beatles) Eliminated

2 Jeremy Rosado "I Know You Won't" (Carrie Underwood) Advanced

3 Brielle Von Hugel "Someone Like You" (Adele) Eliminated

4 DeAndre Brackensick "Georgia on My Mind" (Ray Charles) Advanced

5 Erika Van Pelt "The Edge of Glory" (Lady Gaga) Advanced

6 Reed Grimm "Use Me" (Bill Withers) Eliminated

Grim was a favorite of ours and it was somewhat of a surprise that he didn't go through. As to the reasons why Iovine offered his thoughts, "Way to cabaret for me."

Grim is a good musician in the vein of last seasons Casey Abrams but not as versatile. To us his vocal styling is reminiscent of former Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau.
