NO LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

American Idol is suffering one if their worst ratings seasons ever. Last years result featuring their pandering towards eventual winner Phillip Phillips was the last straw for many now former viewers of the show. Idol's failing popularity mirrors the adage that you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. The program's producers have made mistakes repeatedly in choosing inferior judges. Idol focuses on promoting the judges reputations and star power while largely placing the contestants on the back burner.

Splash TV interviewed former Idol winner Jordan Sparks about the shows declining ratings and requested her to make suggestions of how it could be improved. Her most outstanding comment was the changing of the judges. Sparks was the last female as well as being the last black contestant to win the title.

Given the top 4 are all girls this season guarantees a female winner. Two are black and two white. We opine that NO BLACK WILL WIN. Our money is on Angie Miller who doesn't have the best voice but is the MOST MARKETABLE. She has crossover appeal in the pop and country genres. Miller is young 19, and would influence the largest record buying audience.

Miller also writes original songs which makes her a money tree for the shows creator Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment. We believe they will give her the win and then take her publishing rights. Hopefully they won't seize her songwriting rights. She's too young and impressionable to know any better about how the music business works. Given the complaints of previous contestants they noted that to be on the show contestants must sign agreements that Simon Fuller basically owns their careers.

Another problem that has surfaced this season is Nicki Minaj competes with (too) long time judge Randy Jackson as being annoying with ghetto speak. This is a major weak point adding to the shows huge decline in its popularity. Is this about a talent show or JIVE TALKING and spewing diarrhea of the mouth?

Judging by the results of four consecutive years of WBWG's (white boys with guitars) being the winner suggests that those who are supposedly voting are young impressionable white bubble gum teens that can't recognize talent. The caveat is we don't believe the American public votes in the winner. We believe that the shows creator Simon Fuller selects who he wants to work with and promote to sell records.

Our breakdown of the final four includes Kree Harrison and Candice Glover have the biggest and best voices this season. Amber Holcomb has star quality given her looks and excellent voice but has a limited appeal mostly to a black audience. For some strange reason she is not respected by Idol's largely teeny bopper white audience. Millier has crossover potential in pop and country. Her image is not that of a rocker. She is reminiscent of a weak Carol King type of performer. It will be challenging for her to write songs as superior as Kings but what she does is credible.

From our point of view there will not be a BLACK WINNER as they appear to be set up to be the first two of the top 4 that will be eliminated thus leaving the finals to be Miller and Harrison. Should that come to fruition remember YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!

THE VOICE is a BETTER CHOICE

As the stock value in American Idol declines it rises for the Voice. In the most recent shows three significant results came about. Former Michael Jackson singer Judith Hill advanced. The Swon Brothers (Colton and Zach Swon) advanced following a tough decision round for coach Blake Shelton. In a battle with Christian Porter Shelton said he was going to stick with what he was good at (country music) and selected the country singing brothers as the winner.

The good news is Porter hit notes on the country song they sang that he couldn't sing at rehearsal. The performance of the three singers singing the same song in harmony was by far the best performance of the evening. They could have a winning sound as a group. Together they stand stronger than singing apart. The brothers will continue in the competition and Porters future has yet to be worked out.

NOTES:

THE VOICE Contestants' appearances on earlier talent shows

* Garrett Gardner and Agina Alvarez sang in the blind auditions of season three of The Voice and failed to make a team, but were able to turn chairs this season.

* Rhian and Cara Morgan of The Morgan Twins, Colton Swon of The Swon Brothers, Luke Edgemon, and Agina Alvarez made it to Hollywood Week on the second, seventh, ninth, and eleventh seasons of American Idol respectively.

* Jon Peter Lewis of Midas Whale finished in eighth place on the third season of American Idol.

* Amy Whitcomb performed in season one of The Sing-Off as a member of BYU Noteworthy and again in season three as a member of Delilah.

* Sasha Allen was a contestant on VH1's Born to Diva. This season has the makings of being better than last year.
