NFL PROS ON THE RUN

Tuesday, November 10, 2020

Hey… "I tell you true," as a lady once said to me in Thailand BUT that's a separate story. This tale is about the 32nd Amazing Race. The truth is that for the past several seasons the shows contestants were boring and we canceled watching the show due to a lack of interest. But hey... this is a new day and a new Amazing Race is on that began with four teams of athletes. One might think athletes have an advantage BUT… in the race's history that has turned out not to be true.

This race included the athletic team of two Olympic hurdlers Kellie Wells-Brinkley and LaVonne Idlette. There also was a father son team the father Jerry and his son Frank Eaves. Jerry played basketball at Louisville University.

The team completed a 33-3 record and brought Louisville basketball their first NCAA National Championship when they defeated UCLA 59-54, led by guard Darrell Griffith and his 23 points. Eaves was another guard on the squad. Two other stars on that Louisville team were Rodney and Scooter McCray. Eaves went on to become a basketball coach including a stint at Howard University. Howard is where the newly elected US Vice President Kamala Harris attended.

The bottom line is both of these teams have been eliminated. The hurdlers were the first to go in the 2nd leg. Eaves and his son were the most recent to be eliminated in departing in the 3rd leg. Their problem was they failed to read their instructions and had to double back which cost them time.

The 4th leg was a non elimination leg. The result is there are two athletic teams that remain. A pro volleyball player Riley McKibbin and his bother Maddison are tough competitors with two third and two fourth place finishes.

The most well-known team consists of former NFL players DeAngelo Williams and receiver (an end) Gary Barnidge. Williams was an outstanding running back with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. The two were teammates on the Panthers.

The two have had mixed results in the race with their best being a 2nd place finish in the 2nd leg. Last week they were almost eliminated by finishing 7th or next to last.

The weirdest thing is they failed at a task that they believed played into their strengths. They were the first to arrive at a challenge in Paraguay of throwing watermelons from a truck to their teammate who would stack them in a pyramid. The problem was their throwing and catching were OK BUT….some melons were dropped by Williams.

As usual brawn is not necessarily an advantage on a physical task. The two former NFL players were to learn from other teams that had very little brawn and had to depend on their brains. One brainy team noticed that the bottom row, or foundation of the watermelon pyramid, was placed horizontally.

The next trick was to stack the melons while considering the melons size. An awkward stack had a tendency to lean and fall and that was a major obstacle for the former NFL players. They don't teach stacking or catching melons in the NFL. An NFL football is much smaller than a watermelon. Fortunately our muscle bound heroes were saved from elimination as a sister team ran into a world of trouble.

Williams' athletic resume includes a Pro Bowl selection in (2009), Second-team All-Pro (2008), 2× NFL rushing touchdowns leader (2008, 2015), 3x C-USA Offensive college Player of the Year (2003-2005) and being elected as a First-team (college) All-American (2005).

During his NFL career Williams caught footballs for 236 receptions for 2016 yards and 9 touchdowns. As former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson would say, "How bought them melons?" It's safe to say melon catching will never be included in the NFL game plans.

Overall this is an interesting upbeat diverse cast with two teams of sisters remaining as well as the shows go to the well insertion of a gay couple, married couple, an intellectual pair and a sibling pairing.

Ohhhh… almost forgot the gay couple came in first in the last leg they chose not to stack melons but to perform a traditional Paraguayan bottle dance. Both team members had to successfully perform a choreographic routine with a glass bottle on their head without breaking their bottles to receive their next clue. Suffice to say they made a good decision that did play to their strengths.

After dealing with America's presidential race and having the energy sapped out of you (if applicable) this is a source of relief so… get ready get set and GO… WATCH THE AMAZING RACE 32!
