THE SHOULDA WOULDA COULDA BOYS - PART 2

Hey!!! Whussup? How many front runners are out there in Laker land that are living in no happy land right now? Don't blame me I just observe them and write about them and that's what this is all about the LAKERS ABORTION. I can only refer to my insight to a previous column I burbled that the Lakers were older then dirt. The subject didn't warrant a full column therefore it was a part of subjects that were more worthy. With that in mind I'll take excerpts from my thoughts then and bring it to fruition of what's happening based on recent reports on the Lakers sinking ship.

The group is notoriously known as the 4 PRONG BRAIN TRUST. They consist of the boss Jeanie Buss, General Manager Rob Pelinka, former Laker player from the 80's Kurt Rambis and his wife Linda. What in the WORLD are the NBA business credentials for Linda Rambis to be a decision maker for one of the worst teams in the NBA since daddy's little girl Jeanie Buss inherited the team.

The answer is she is supposedly Jeanie's closest friend. The problem is Buss is running the team, as she too often refers to it, as being a family. This is daddy's little girl's plaything and she needs to be surrounded by people that buy into the Laker family concept. Well OK lets buy into the Laker family concept and dig under the skin to see why things are going so badly for this DYSFUNCTIONAL LAKERS FAMILY.

On April 9, 2019, Magic Johnson stepped down as the team's president of basketball operations, and two days later, the Lakers parted ways with head coach Luke Walton after the team failed to reach the playoffs for the sixth straight year. It was a sneak attack on Johnson's part as he failed to inform the woman he claimed to love Jeanie Buss that he was quitting. Instead he called his own press conference before a game.

It was well attended and his word got out to Mama Jeanie. His parting words were if she wants to listen to him then go ahead (paraphrase). It was never disclosed who HIM WAS. We opined that it was either Pelinka OR…. LeBron James. No tears were shed by James when he heard the news. One of Johnson's claim to executive fame was he signed LeBron to the Lakers. Go figure.

Under the nine season Jeanie Buss family reign the franchise has compiled a 290 win 427 loss record. Their claim to fame was winning the COVID, BUBBLE NBA title. It was LeBron James 2nd season with the team that finished with a 52-19 record. The COVID issue compromised the league to shorten the season from the normal 82 games to 71.

The glue on the side was Anthony Davis who is really the relevant talent on the side. His addition solidified James game not to be so rebound dependent for the team. Davis' presence permitted James to be more freewheeling from anywhere on the floor without having to be close to the basket from rebounds.

It was only the 2nd winning season in the four seasons that James has been with the Lakers. This season is only the 3rd time in James career that he has played on a team that failed to make the playoffs and two of them have been with the Lakers. Little Jeanie's led Lakers have had only two winning seasons both with James on the squad.

What sealed the deal that the four prong Jeannie Buss brain trust that is running the team is dysfunctional is what they did in assembling for this season a group of long time outstanding players. The problem is 10 were over 30 and five over 35. In pro sports when an athlete reaches the age of 30 it is said to be downhill for their careers due to aging and the wear and tear on their bodies. The most interest thing about those acquired is three are on the NBA'S ALL TIME BEST PLAYERS LIST… LeBron, Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony.

Buss's selling point to players that she would like to sign is the Hollyweird aspect. She tells them that entertainment stars are season ticket holders and they can play in front of the stars. Some go for it and go Hollyweird albeit parties or even getting a business deal in the entertainment business. Kobe Bryant did it and so did LeBron.

This season the spotlight was on Russell Westbrook. He's from here so he could be closer to his family. He also made a film deal that was released at the end of the season. The problem is there was a negative spotlight on his play from the beginning of the season when he was making too many turnovers. That problem eased off as the season progressed but by then the Lakers season was doomed.

Throughout the season the Lakers pruned their roster tree by departing with Rojon Rondo 35 and Deandre Jordan 33. The team was leaner but was not meaner in being aggressive and cohesive as a team.

In September I wrote a blurb regarding the OLDER THAN DIRT LAKERS… The Los Angeles Lakers family grandmother Jeanie Buss 60, better top up her health insurance since her Hollyweird Boys most likely will be the oldest team ever assembled in the history of the League. There is no doubt that this squad of aging super stars can win the title IF…. THEY STAY HEALTHY. There are several players under 30 but should the Lakers choose to retain all of the older than dirt players then cuts can be severe. At 28 Anthony Davis is the mainstay of that group.

Injuries will occur therefore creating plenty of playing time for their talented players on the bench. Game substitutions and rotation will be essential to keep a healthy squad throughout the season. The end result is this should be one of the most talked about Lakers squads ever.

Hey… I don't claim to be a prophet but this time I believe it's a deserving term for my acute observations and predictions.

Well as time would have it all of those predictions came to fruition. Throughout the season the squad had injuries. That brought about complaints from players that warranted them the Lakers shoulda woulda coulda Award Part 2. I gave the first one out to the Lakers over 20 years ago. If I can find the story I will provide a link to it.

Currently the word it more turmoil in the organization. The affront is from LeBron and his agent that want things done differently. They want Pelinka. Kurt and Linda Rambis fired. Their issue most likely will not be fulfilled.

With the firing of coach Frank Vogel after three seasons and a championship the search is on. Consider this…. Since the team revolves around James make him a player coach. Lenny Wilkens, Bob Cousey, Bill Russell, Neil Johnston and Dave DeBusschere did it so WHY NOT JAMES?

Put the weight on his shoulders. You can sing the song in your head as I finish. If he wins or loses then all of his frowning and complaints can be in his basket. With that said it is amazing the production he had this season at his age… 37 is AMAZING.

The question remains…. What basketball ball decision positions that qualify Linda Rambis to be a Lakers executive?
