FAST START WITH POSITIVE RESULTS

When Korea's Son Heung-Ming and Germany's Thomas Muller signed with MLS teams I was pumped, these are two of my favorite soccer/football players. Their signings raised the leagues International profile

Muller has always been on my list since he was a sensation in World Cup play with Germany. He scored 35 goals in 131 appearances for the national side. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he played a major role in helping the team win the trophy, as he scored five goals and received the Silver Ball as the tournament's second best player and the Silver Boot as the second top goalscorer.

He was also named in the World Cup All-Star XI and in the Dream Team. He retired from international football after the UEFA Euro 2024. Müller is the most decorated German footballer in history with 34 trophies, along with Toni Kroos.

With Bayern Munich he won a record thirteen Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals, eight DFL-Supercups, two Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, and two FIFA Club World Cups.

Having been thoroughly initiated to the game in Asia I've been interested in the development of Asian players and teams. Son 33 has been the most successful Asian that I'm aware of in the Premier League. The Korean International concluded a 10-year stint with Tottenham Hotspur and signed with the LA Football Club (LAFC) for a fee of around $26 million.

He kicked off with a bang scoring eight goals and two assists in eight games. That thrust him up to second place on the clubs stat charts.

Muller 36 began his MLS career in Vancouver with four goals and two assists in four games while taking only eight shots.

Their presence in the league raises the skill and influence bar. The MLS has come a long way since I covered LA Galaxy games in 1997. At that time the Galaxy were playing at the Rose Bowl.

Attendance was poor. Usually a crowd of 15 thousand attended games. It felt like a minnow being swallowed in a Whales belly. The cavernous like Rose Bowl felt very lonely. Credit must go to the league in its prudent development.

ACES ACED IT

The Las Vegas Aces did it again in winning their winning their third WNBA title in four years. Led by the league's MVP Aja Wilson they stormed back from playing 50/50 ball at the All-star break with a 16 game winning streak.

To win the title they swept the Phoenix Mercury in four games to win 97-86. The league's MVP Wilson scored 34 points. The Aces finished the regular season with the leagues second best record, 30-14 tied with the Atlanta Dream. Wilson credits coach Becky Hammond the team's resurgence.

She praised Hammond for staying with her charges and encouraging the team to fight back and turn the season around. She noted that Hammond made personal bonds with all of her players. It could be said that she created a family atmosphere and winning the title was a family affair.
