THE UNHAPPY CAMPER

There is a saying that there is a seven year itch when it comes to a failing marriage. In Cristiano Ronaldo's case he seems to have a five year itch when things start to go bad for the hugely talented star currently plying his trade with Real Madrid under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho. Hmmmm!

It appears that it's that time of life again for Cristiano Ronaldo the now 27-year old Real Madrid striker as he is gaining a lot of attention that he is displeased with his playing situation.

The Portugal International spent six campaigns with Manchester United but in his fifth season with the club he started to rumble that he was unhappy and wanted to play in Spain with real Madrid. At the time he claimed at the time that it was a rumor and not true and he was happy with United and playing under Alex Ferguson although they had won the league titles and the Champions League.

The following season the rumor turned into reality as the rumors turned into reality and it became clear that it would be is last season with the club. During his stay at Man U he registered 84 league goals and 118 in all competitions in those six seasons. The talk was that he was all about himself and how many goals he could score. On June 11, 2009 Manchester United accepted an unconditional offer of £80 million from Real Madrid for Ronaldo after it was revealed that he again had expressed his desire to leave the club.

Now in his fourth season and three games this year with Real he has already registered 114 league goals and 150 in all competitions including a career high of 60 last year. He's gained a reputation of a malcontent and wants to shoot all of the penalty kicks to raise his goal total. He also failed to appear at a FIFA Player of the year awards show since he knew Lionel Messi would be the winner. Now he's unhappy again but the underlying cause is unknown.

Ronaldo replied to his being unhappy rumors on his Twitter account. "That I am feeling sad and have expressed this sadness has created a huge stir. I am accused of wanting more money, but one day it will be shown that this is not the case. At this point, I just want to guarantee to the Real Madrid fans that my motivation, dedication, commitment and desire to win all competitions will not be affected. I have too much respect for myself and for Real Madrid to ever give less to the club than all I am capable of."

In March 2010, France Football ranked Ronaldo at the top third of its list of the world's richest footballers, behind David Beckham and Lionel Messi, with £27 million (€29.2 million) in combined income from salaries, bonuses and off-field earnings. His net wealth is estimated at $160 million. In June 2012, SportsPro rated Ronaldo as the 5th most marketable athlete in the world.

Ronaldo's increasing reputation led both the media and former great players to draw comparisons between Ronaldo and FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, which Ronaldo has commented on saying: "Some people say I'm better, other people say it's him, but at the end of the day, they're going to decide who is the best player. Sometimes it makes me tired. For him too because they compare us together all the time. You cannot compare a Ferrari with a Porsche because it's a different engine. You cannot compare them. He does the best things for Barcelona; I do the best things for Madrid. I think we push each other sometimes in the competition, this is why the competition is so high."

So.... what's the problem? Is he unhappy that he is not the biggest fish on the Spanish football scene? Stay tuned...

Ann Meyers was the first female to sign a contract with an NBA team - Maxi Basket - photo

DID YOU KNOW?

On this day in the NBA September 5, 1980 Ann Meyers who played her college ball at UCLA University was the first female to sign with an NBA club. She signed a $50,000 no-cut contract with the Indiana Pacers. She participated in three-day tryouts for the team, the first by any woman for the NBA, but eventually was not chosen for the final squad.

Meyers became a color analyst for the team at a time when there were very few women in sportscasting. She also was the first woman player drafted by the Women's Professional Basketball League (WPBL) in 1978 to the New Jersey Gems. Playing for the Gems, Meyers was the WPBL Co-MVP for the 1979-1980. She also won TV's Women Superstars competition three consecutive years: 1980, 1981, and 1982. Meyers served as an analyst for NBC Sports coverage of women's basketball at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

On November 1, 1986, she married former Los Angeles Dodger Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale, and took the name Ann Meyers Drysdale. It was the first time that a married couple were members of their respective sports' Halls of Fame.

Meyers and Drysdale had three children together: Don Jr. "D.J." (son), Darren (son), and Drew (daughter). She was widowed on July 3, 1993 when Drysdale died of a heart attack in Montreal, Canada.

Meyers is the sister of former NBA player Dave Meyers, who also played college basketball at UCLA, under legendary coach John Wooden. He played four seasons for the Milwaukee Bucks after being one of four players traded from the Los Angeles Lakers (who had selected him in the first round of the 1975 NBA Draft) for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

She currently serves as the president and general manager for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and vice president of the NBA's Phoenix Suns.

GO FIGURE

When it comes to understanding what prompts some decisions to be made in ASEAN sports it boggles the mind. Cambodia sent more coaches and officials to the London Olympics than athletes. Among those included among those who traveled to London in representing the realm was a Nigerian who was given the title of the team's spokesperson.

What really confounds the mind is that their best marathon runner Hem Bunting was denied being included on the team although he is Cambodia's record holder in his event and represented the nation in the Beijing Olympics where he carried the nation's flag.

To compound that insult the president of Cambodia's Olympic committee wanted to send a WEALTHY Japanese runner who has spent very little time living in Cambodia to the London Olympics. The credential was denied by International Olympic officials since he lacked the required length of time as being a naturalized Cambodian citizen.

The Cambodia Daily reported in its April 11, 2012 edition Japanese runner and comedian Takizakai Kunaiki aka Neko Hiroshi as well as Cat Hiroshi has donated large sums of money to Cambodia's National Olympic Committee. His best marathon time is FIVE MINUTES behind that of Bunting's. The article noted that other Cambodian athletes on the Olympic team were disappointed in the Olympic Committee's decision.
