Sports Notes EXTRA - ZIDANE LOSES THE PLOT - ITALY WINS WORLD CUP TITLE - July 2006

Zinédine Zidane who lost the plot by head butting Italy's Marco Materazzi

In a thrilling match Italy won the 2006 World Cup in Germany in a penalty shootout 5-3 after a 1-1 regulation score. But perhaps what will be remembered the most in football history was that it was a bitter, sweet contest that was the final game of the famed Zinédine Zidane who lost the plot by head butting Italy's Marco Materazzi in the chest in the 110th minute of extra time with the score level at 1-1.

The bitter is that the Zidane, Materazzi duel went on throughout the game from when the Italian fouled a French player in the box resulting in Zidane converting a penalty kick in the seventh minute giving the French a 1-0 advantage.

Materazzi redeemed himself in the 19th minute with a header off a corner kick into the net to level the match 1-1.

Then came the bitter as Zidane the pillar of strength for the French squad, was caught on camera head butting Matterazi at midfield in extra time.

It was an incident that the referee and his two assistants didn't see. The fourth and fifth assistants referred to a video and noted the infraction and Zidane was shown the red card and ejected from the game.

The contest went on for 120 minutes with no score and then to a penalty shootout. Italy made all of their tries but David Trezeguet, on France's second attempt hit the crossbar and that turned out to be all she wrote for the French.

With the penalty score 4-3 Italy's Fabio Grosso clinched the victory by blasting the ball into the back of the net giving the Italians their 4th World Cup title. It was a 24-year wait their last title being 1982.

While Zidane was relegated to the French dressing room with his reputation tarnished votes that were collected at halftime were being counted and he was later named as the winner of the Golden Ball.

Since he announced his retirement that was his last game unless he changes his mind and gives playing another go. The question is will this head-butting incident be what he is remembered for after an illustrious career? Stay tuned…
