THE APPROACHES

Apparently social media has inspired some individuals to attempt to become journalists. This is one step down from the journalism one might find in Cambodia. We have experienced two incidents of being approached by individuals to individuals to participate in a video and be interviewed by them. One experience was in Cambodia and the other in Thailand. The following describes the events.

THAILAND

While walking down the street I (Roman) spotted an attractive looking Muslim girl. She reminded me of a Malaysian singer Putri who was a Muslim and a contestant in the K-Pop STAR HUNT singing contest in 2014.

The lady I encountered had a big smile and to my surprise approached me. I must say I was taken back by her move BUT there was a catch, several other girls came with her.

At that point my fantasies went out the window as I was to learn that this was to become a business proposition as another girl in the group stepped forward and asked me to do an interview for them which I declined.

I politely informed them that I was a journalist. I showed them photos of me at work that I carry around just for such an occasion. As the saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words and it works for me since I travel in numerous countries where I speak a little of their language or none at all then the photos become an asset and a tool in communicating and getting to know people.

The little ladies were receptive to my decision to decline their request and I asked that very IMPORTANT QUESTION…. DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS CARD.?

The reply was NO and I then gave them mine.

It is WISE to BEWARE who approaches you to do an interview. It's imperative to know and APPLY the basics of journalism, ask them the WHO (are they), WHAT (is the interview for) WHERE (will it go or can be seen) WHEN (will it air or be published) & WHY (are they asking you for the interview aka purpose)!

CAMBODIA

While working out in a gym in Siem Reap, Cambodia a young Japanese man approached me (Wanderuagh) and asked if I would do an interview for him. It raised the questions for WHO and WHAT and ABOUT WHAT.

His reply was the interview was for him, for the internet and about working out in a Cambodian gym. I suggested that he interview a Khmer that spoke English and pointed out a Khmer that appeared to have English language skills. Yes… I have a perceptive ability and I was right.

The young man interviewed the willing Khmer. After his interview it occurred to me… WHO IS THIS GUY?

I then asked if he had a business card. He didn't know what a business card was. I suggested to him that if he was doing a legitimate business and was honest with his intentions that he should have a business card.

The young man was receptive too my suggestion and I gave him something he DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT…. A BUSINESS CARD (mine).
