SPORTS STAR HANGS IN THERE

It's an OHH MY as the current edition (series 36) of the Amazing Race has adopted some changes as a result of the COVID scare that brought about some traveling adjustments.

One noticeable change is the series has chartered a plane apparently for health purposes and having more control of their traveling schedule. Since teams all travel together they depart in staggered groups 15 minutes apart according to when they finished in the previous leg.

As scripted the usual mix of representatives of the 13 teams include various races, gay (men & women teams), parent and child and married.

The Rainbow coalition of males Ricky & Cesar have made a strong showing winning three of the six/seven legs thus far while finishing 2nd four times.

Leg six was a mega leg (double elimination) meaning a team was eliminated at the halfway point but the remaining teams continued on in the race after which another team was eliminated.

But hey… as in the past we follow the sports entries closely.

Rod & Leticia Gardner fill that bill. Rod is a former professional football player in the NFL for the then Washington Redskins currently name changed to the Washington Commanders. Being 46-years-old he remains in very good shape as in muscled out.

At 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) and 215 lb (98 kg) he can still get around. Although his wife is in great shape he takes on the physical challenges. The problem is he faltered in two challenges that stand out.

Gardner struggled with the power in his legs when teams had to grind plastic bottles with a stationary bicycle until they filled a container in order to receive their next clue.

After struggling through that another challenge on a football field one team member had to play bubble soccer and score a goal in order to receive their next clue.

Now this is where things got funny. Being a former pro football player one would think this would be easy for him. Gardner was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for six seasons. He was familiar with scoring 23 touchdowns during his career. His career high was in his second season in the league when he scored 8 TD's. Also that season he had a career high running with the ball, after catching it, totaling for 1,006 yards.

But here's the deal… during the challenge the NFL pro was knocked down on his bubble by a challenger working for the show as an extra. When he got up he was knocked down again. At that point, to paraphrase, he said wow these guys are hitting FOR REAL.

It is a laugher and a keeper since it is one of the funniest moments of all shows to hear the reaction of a former professional NFL player that was knocked down by a show paid extra, on his bubble.

When you consider that he's been hit really hard by HUGE MEN that get paid millions of dollars to knock a player down and sometimes out then one can really grasp the humor of the situation. THEY HIT REALLY, REALLY HARD! I COULD GO INTO DETAIL BUT I'LL SAVE THAT FOR A SPORTS COLUMN.

If you have access to a rerun of leg six watch it and you MOST LIKELY, will laugh.

For those that can't relate to the NFL as it is America's brand of football perhaps you can relate to this. Gardner played the same position as Taylor Swift's current boyfriend Travis Kelce of the current Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. GOT THE PICTURE?
