DO YOU HAVE THE MUSIC IN YOU?

TV programming is heating up after what could be deemed a dismal summer of some of the most boring shows ever. American Idol came to a close in June leaving a large void to be filled for those who love music blended with reality. That void is currently being filled with two music theme programs The Voice and The Glee Project. We covered the Glee Project in our previous Video Beat but now The Voice takes center stage. The bottom line is for music lovers Sunday through Wednesday is your time to shine.

The Voice televised on the AXN Network stands out above the others since there is no age limit. A 56-year-old housewife competed but failed to impress the celebrity judges consisting of entertainer/vocalists Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Maroon 5 lead vocalist Adam Levine and country artist Blake Shelton. With each having a different background in different genre of music it give contestants from all backgrounds a chance to be chosen to compete.

The series consists of three phases: a blind audition, a battle phase, and live performance shows. Four judges/coaches, all noteworthy recording artists, choose teams of contestants through a blind audition process. Each judge has the length of the auditioner's performance (about one minute) to decide if he or she wants that singer on his or her team; if two or more judges want the same singer (as happens frequently), the singer has the final choice of coach.

Each team of singers is mentored and developed by its respective coach. In the second stage, called the battle phase, coaches have two of their team members battle against each other directly by singing the same song together, with the coach choosing which team member to advance from each of four individual "battles" into the first live round. Within that first live round, the surviving four acts from each team again compete head-to-head, with public votes determining one of two acts from each team that will advance to the final eight, while the coach chooses which of the remaining three acts comprises the other performer remaining on the team.

In the final phase, the remaining contestants (Final 8) compete against each other in live broadcasts. The television audience and the coaches have equal say 50/50 in deciding who moves on to the final 4 phase. With one team member remaining for each coach, the (final 4) contestants compete against each other in the finale with the outcome decided solely by public vote.

The program moves at a fast pace thus not boring. The interaction between the judges adds a humorous flavor to the show with Aguilera often going at it with Adam Levine. All of the judges take humorous shots at Cee Lo Green since he is partial to pretty girls. Aguilera is the most talkative and Shelton the most reserved.

The show completed its run in America and the winner has been decided. The winning mentor will surprise many as in the selection phase that judge was the most overlooked by the talent when they had the choice to choose. A new episode of the The Voice airs Sunday nights with repeats Monday and Tuesday. New episodes of the Glee Project air Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with repeats throughout the week. TGP repeats the three episodes that airs on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in blocks on Saturday and Sunday. Both are worth watches. If you SNOOZE and miss these programs YOU LOSE.
