A COVER-UP ?

This past week two stories jumped up in the news. There has been an abundance of coverage on the apparent character assassination by the US government of Wiki-Leaks founder Julian Assange. CNN and all of the major international news networks have worked overtime magnifying this story.

Assange is wanted for questioning in Sweden regarding alleged sexual offences, and was arrested in London, England on 7 December 2010. He is currently on bail and under house arrest in England pending an extradition hearing. He has denied the allegations and claimed they are politically motivated.

Oddly what has been largely missing from the news is a much more major story than Assange's leaks of various government's subversive tactics and thoughts is the story on pro war advocate and former US Vice President Dick Cheney agreeing to pay US $250 million in fines for bribery in Nigeria to avoid prosecution.

The Guardian reported the story but we failed to see any mention of it on the pro War USA propaganda network CNN. As we often mention if it's war you're looking for tune in to CNN.

Assange is on a mission to expose the behind the scenes behaviors of governments while Cheney is involved with bribes for the company he was in charge of Halliburton whose business' benefit from wars. The Nigerian courts dropped all charges after Cheney plea bargained. The man recognized from the snarl on his face was assisted by follow Texan and former US President George H Bush and former US Secretary of State James Baker.

The Cheney incident raises the questions how much money has he made from Halliburton in any form such as stocks, finders fees or any other manner while he was Vice President? Did he divest himself of his stock holdings in any companies that benefited from supplying war materials or services? Cheney oversaw the 1991 Operation Desert Storm, among other actions. He was chairman and CEO of Halliburton Company from 1995 to 2000. The now 69-year-old served as the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under George W. Bush.

Cheney's record as CEO was subject to some dispute among Wall Street analysts; a 1998 merger between Halliburton and Dresser Industries attracted the criticism of some Dresser executives for Halliburton's lack of accounting transparency. During Cheney's tenure, Halliburton changed its accounting practices regarding revenue realization of disputed costs on major construction projects. Cheney resigned as CEO of Halliburton on July 25, 2000. As vice president, he argued that this step removed any conflict of interest. Cheney's net worth, estimated to be between $30 million and $100 million, is largely derived from his post at Halliburton, as well as the Cheney's' gross income of nearly $8.82 million.

He was also part of the board of advisors of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) before becoming vice president.

In early 2000, while serving as the CEO of Halliburton, Cheney headed then-Governor of Texas George W. Bush's vice-presidential search committee. On July 25, after reviewing Cheney's findings, Bush surprised some pundits by asking Cheney himself to join the Republican ticket. Halliburton reportedly reached agreement on July 20 to allow Cheney to retire, with a package estimated at $20 million.

A few months before the election Cheney put his home in Dallas up for sale and changed his drivers' license and voter registration back to Wyoming. This change was necessary to allow Texas' presidential electors to vote for both Bush and Cheney without contravening the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which forbids electors from voting for someone from their own state for both President and Vice-President.
