On The Lot Trims Down To Final 8 Contestants

On the Lot is a reality show competition produced by Steven Spielberg and reality show king Mark Burnett who also produces The Apprentice and The Contender. The show, features filmmakers competing in weekly elimination competition for a million dollar development deal at DreamWorks Film studios.

The series airs in Southeast Asia Wednesdays each week. There were 50 contestants in the initial episode that will be narrowed down to the final eight this Wednesday when two of the contestants will be eliminated. This past week Shalini Kantayya, 30, and Hilary Graham, 37 were eliminated.

Last week Kantayya's film was criticized as being too preachy while Graham's film received positive reviews from the judges. Viewer voting makes the final decision of who will be eliminated.

The series airs on the Star Movie Network in Asia. Film directors in the region are promoted on the channel expressing their critic of the show. The series airs in America on Star Movie's parent company News Corp's Fox Television Network.

US media have given the series mixed results and the ratings there have not been favorable. Initial criticism of the show was that Lot did not show the films the contestants put together in advance for the auditions. In addition, the judges were faulted for not providing helpful criticism.

Two of the judges Carrie Fisher and Garry Marshall are on every show along with a different guest judge each week.

Fisher's writing credentials include her first novel, Postcards from the Edge in 1987. The book was semi-autobiographical in the sense that she fictionalized and satirized real life events such as her drug addiction of the late 1970s. It became a bestseller, and she received the Los Angeles Pen Award for Best First Novel.

As an actress Fisher made her film debut in the Columbia comedy Shampoo (1975) starring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie and Goldie Hawn, with Lee Grant and Jack Warden.

Her best-known work as an actress is for her portrayal of Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars trilogy. Fisher is the daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds.

ON THE LOT airs Wednesday nights at 7 PM Thailand/Cambodia time. There are several repeats during the week. Please see schedule below.

PIRATE MASTER

As we stated in our last column reality shows bring out the best and worst in people. We also noted that former NFL (national Football League) running back Christian Okoye was going to be eliminated and suggested that viewers pay attention to what transpired between Okoye and the crew that resulted in his expulsion.

Deceit and greed played a major factor in his elimination. The crew elected captain of the Pirate Master ship Joe Don has received criticism from the crew when he took 50% of the two $40,000 treasures found by two different crew members. He gave the crew a meager reward of $200 each. He gave his two officers $5,000 each.

He then appointed a first mate in the crew to report to him what was going on with them. He also paid him $2,000. The mate noted that he took it as a bribe and all that he cared about was the money.

In the last episode the first mate accused Okoye of being a straggler since he was the last in line on a hike through the jungles in search of the treasure. In reality Okoye's all-star football career ended with a knee injury. He's big and strong but the knees are bad.

Throughout the show the first mate continued to make negative comments about Okoye known in the NFL as the Nigerian Nightmare.

As usual the captain and his two officers decided the three crew members that would be up for elimination to be voted off the ship by the crew.

The captain felt uneasy about Okoye feeling that he was a threat to his position since Okoye was opposed to the captain taking so much money for himself and giving the crew virtually nothing.

The captain's tactic is to choose the person he feels is a threat and then choose one or two of the crew that he feels the crew likes thereby exposing the person he doesn't like subject to expulsion.

The crew challenged the first mate about his receiving money for his position. He said he only received $1,000.... HE LIED

Okoye was chosen for elimination along with another dissenter who was also Okoye's friend. The other person chosen was a low profile no threat weak female that couldn't swim very well.

When Okoye spoke to defend himself he pointed out that if he were captain that he would share all the money with the crew. The nine-man crew voted him off the ship by a 5-4 margin. Okoye's friend was spared but seeks revenge in the next episode. What will happen? Tune in or stay tuned.

THE APPRENTICE

This past week Donald Trump's children got involved in the show as judges. The change gives the show a fresh look. Both are smart and have great appearances. Check this out. It is worth a look to see and hear Trump's children and how he's influenced their behavior.

America's Next TOP MODEL

America's Next Top Model Cycle 8 originally aired in America from February 28, 2007 - May 16, 2007. The series debut was last week in Southeast Asia on Channel V.

The winner will receive management and representation by Elite Model Management, a US$100,000 contract with Cover Girl cosmetics, and a cover and six-page spread within Seventeen magazine.

Of the 33 girls who were originally selected they now have the contestants that will be on the series including a contestant that was sent off last year. She's Latino and claims that she will be the first Latino to win the contest.
