James Loving - National Radio Text Service

Our Internet presence preceded Google with radio programming being our primary business. Given Google has limited knowledge and its primary focus is to sell ads and not provide accurate search results we have compiled our most popular stories since we launched in April 1997. Two of our stories had immediate radio coverage response following our Internet release. What were they... read on?

CROSSOVER STORIES ENHANCE RATINGS

National Radio's beginning was in 1975 doing reporting for print publications on subjects regarding the music business and acting. In 1979 we began our television productions by continuing to cover music business personalities. In 1989 we ventured into radio production while expanding our coverage with sports. Our programming aired on over 1000 stations in the United States via seven radio networks.

In 1991 our columns were covered internationally being printed in the French, Russian, Thai, Khmer and German languages as well as English. It was 1997 that we ventured into the Internet sphere when we launched our National Radio Text Service in April 1997. In 2000 we expanded our coverage by including travel.

Given our expanse and history of publishing stories prior to the Internet and Google we know what others don't know as we monitored the reaction and responses.

What stands out the most are the stories that transcended from the Internet to being covered on the radio. It is common practice in the news room, TV and radio studios reading newspapers and searching the Internet for stories to comment on is a common practice.

For that reason our story Angels With Dirty Faces jumps to the top of the list. Within four hours of the story being uploaded to the Internet as we were driving to Anaheim Stadium to cover an Angels Major League Baseball game we heard Sports talk radio host Lee Hamilton from a major station in San Diego, California repeat our headline, "ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES... I love it."

That quick turnaround time glaringly showed how powerful the Internet was in dispensing information and having a response in such a rapid manner. After an innocent beginning Google and Wall Street changed the integrity of what the Internet and Google were supposed to be and currently proves itself to be unreliable and in the sales business as opposed to providing accurate, honest information.

The other major crossover story was our report on Racist Radio that ranks sixth overall but never reached umber one status years after it was published. What is most noticeable about this story is as old as it is it continues to active and rated.

The story details the antics of an ignorant acrid sports reporter that was for some strange reason adored and catered to my others in the media and media personnel of sports teams. The problem was he proved to be dishonest in staging a hoax show in which he had a friend in Florida pretend to be a good friend of then LA Dodgers owner Rupert Murdoch.

They berated then Dodger pitcher Hideo Nomo who is of Japanese decent. I was in disbelief and this tirade against Nomo was obviously racist. It went on for quite some time as I continued to listen to the phony program as I was driving to Dodger Stadium. I was incensed and knew this so called sports talk radio host as we worked at the same radio station KFI in Los Angeles and he had a dodgey history from my point of view. I immediately wrote the story.

The following day in the Dodger Stadium press box you could cut the tension with a knife as I walked in and had to pass this hoaxer as him being then over 700 pounds he had to sit at the end of the row in the press box to the top (third row). Everyone knew the situation but they ignored what he did and I was the only one in the press box that reported the incident.

A radio sports talk friend of mine then called me and said that a radio trade magazine reported the story as well. We didn't take a count of how many people read the story on the Internet at the time given it was August 1998 and we weren't aware of any search engines. The cold vibe spoke volumes as the indicator.

Given that this is the turn of the year we took a look back to our most popular stories before the Internet became popular as well as including our most popular radio/Internet stories.

The criterion is based on impact and not on being rated number one. The last time we took such a survey in 2006 without including the radio impact the two top stories remain the top 2 on our most popular list.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jim Murray continues to hold down the number one spot. He was number one for almost three years. As the Internet grew and our coverage went International the story of Doctor Beat Richner took over the number one spot for almost two years therefore it remains 2nd on our All Time NR Top 10 list.

Our story on Cambodia's Royal Palace has a strange history. It was originally turned down by a Khmer publication thus we place it on our site. That story never made it to number one but for years was ranked in the 2nd or 3rd position. Evidently it was so good that a young Khmer boy that worked for the Korean Embassy stole the story and placed it on his blog site. Though he failed to adhere to out notice at the bottom of every page: © Copyright: National Radio. Any use of these materials, whole or in part, is prohibited unless authorized in writing by National Radio. Contact: nationalradio@yahoo.com All rights reserved.

The Khmer was kind enough to give us credit for our photos. Google was kind enough to him a disrespectful of International Intellectual property laws to give him credit for our stolen story by crediting the Khmer and giving him a link to Google. If its integrity you're looking for YOU WON'T FIND IT AT GOOGLE.

Though Google's illegal practice drained hits to our story it maintained enough interest to rank 3rd on our all time NR Top 10 rankings.

Cambodian football was a primary interest of ours when we covered the 1998 Asian Games held in Bangkok, Thailand. The problem was they failed to qualify. We pursued our interest and at a Tiger Cup press conference in 2000 met with then Cambodian Football Federation President Ravy Khek and Tola May then in charge of You football. They agreed to do an interview when we came to Cambodia thus Cambodian Football Rising from the Ashes came to fruition. That story was hot for over a year and held the number one position for several weeks. It also crossed over and with our permission and payment was published in Khmer.

SECTIONS MOST VISITED

Sports was the first category to be defined. It evolved following our coverage of International football/soccer. It was the first to have its own category as it was an expansion of sports. At the beginning our target was to publish one story a week emphasizing a magazine format. When the two were separated Soccer became the most popular and maintained being number one through most of the period from its creation in 2001.

Television reviews became the next most popular. From that American Idol and the Freshie Girl & Boys contest evolved due to our extensive coverage and readier interest on the subjects. BIZ WHO IS became popular when we launched it in 2007. The NBA and the Lakers sub pages were immediately popular when they were launched in 2006. Although we seldom cover the NFL that category has maintained popularity throughout without ever reaching a number one position in the ratings. We believe it is due to the feature stories that we do with much of it coming from our radio coverage of the league from 1988-98.

While our coverage on travel primarily in Thailand and Cambodia we discovered a tremendous amount of interest in Cambodia. We attribute that to Cambodia being mysterious. When we started reporting on the nation in 1999 it immediately captured our reader's attention. At that time when we researched the internet for information on Cambodia there was only a report from Yale University regarding the Khmer Rouge conflict. Basically we started from scratch and the search engines followed in posting our stories. When they lost the plot in selling advertising on HOT PAGES we were pushed off a page that our content created.

When we first visited the country in 1998 we were given unofficial numbers of there being only 20 foreigners residing in Sihanoukville, 200 in Siem Reap and 2000 in Phnom Penh. At the time we were told that there were 300 NGO's in the country and those numbers have increased to 3,000 today. With our vast content we separated the Cambodian category into four parts including Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Travel Tips and Cambodian Sports.

NOTE:

This report will continue to be updated

Sports Notes ARCHIVES - Cambodian Football.... Rising From the Ashes - October 2000
In Cambodia the Killing Fields are over. The game of football is now helping heal a nation and its people. For many years during the Vietnam War, Khmer Rouge Civil War and the Coup d'Edat of July 5-6, 1997 there was no organized soccer being played in the country.
