SHOHEI OHTANI TURNS IT ON

Everyone was alarmed when Shohei Ohtani started off slow to a slow start this season. Is batting average was low and there was a scarcity of power translating into home runs. Ohtani was dealing with being newly married and requesting privacy. He also was dealing with recovering from a Tommy John surgery as well as finding out that his interpreter stole $16 million dollars from him. As they saying goes... WHAT A LOAD.

But talent and perseverance are signs of a true champion. As of April 23, through 25 games Ohtani was leading the Dodgers and the major leagues in batting average with .364% and hits 36. Sixteen of those hits are for extra basses including 6 home runs, tied with Mookie Betts for the team lead. He also leads the major leagues in doubles and total bases.

The cherry on top is Ohtani's 6TH HR enables him to break former NY Yankee Hideki Matsui's HR record of 177. That HR being his 178th career MLB HR is the most home runs hit by a Japanese-born player in Major League Baseball history.

Dodger manager Dave Roberts has noticed a difference on Ohtani's habits since joining the team. The skipper has observed Ohtani getting comfortable in his surroundings, acclimating with his new teammates and coaches. The bottom line is things are looking up for the contracted $700 million dollar man in his adapting his talents with his new team.

Ohtani has yet to tie or break a record that Matsui continues to hold. That would be on and winning a World Series with a team. Should that come to fruition it would really be the cherry on top of Ohtani's cake of success.

TIME MARCHES ON - THE END of the WARRIORS ERA?

It's not surprising that the Golden State Warriors are at the end of their exceptional success. Prior to the injury to Klay Thompson that kept him out of two seasons it seemed the team was unbeatable. Following Thompson's injury they won another title but clearly they were not the team of old.

The sizzling trio have won four NBA titles together within an eight year period 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022). That includes back to back titles in 2017 & 18. They have won a majority of the franchises seven titles since it was founded in 1946.

Former NBA star Charles Barkley laid it on the line by nothing that the team has lost its punch simply because THEY ARE OLD. The Round Mound of Rebound got it right.

Believe it not the eldest of this Dynamic TRIO is former baby faced assassin Steph Curry. We've grown up with Curry but many of us have failed to realize that he's now 36-years-old. Curry is now in the OLDER THAN DIRT (OTD) bracket.

Actually the three have grown old together. Both Draymond Green and Thompson are 35-years-old. Next season they will join Curry as in the OTD bracket.

Curry joined the team in 2009 and has the greatest longevity having been a Warrior for 14 seasons. Thompson signed up in 2011. He has worn the blue and gold for 12 seasons. Green is the baby of the bunch, if you choose to call it that. He signed on in 2012. He has been a Warrior for 11 seasons.

For active players only Udonis Haslem of the Miami Heat has been with one team longer than the trio with 20 years as a Miami Heat player.

One thing is certain, Curry is most responsible for changing the way the game is played today. His 3-point skill has been adopted by teams and players throughout the league. Young children are now practicing shooting shots from the 3-point distance although they are too young and too weak to convert. They are trying to make 3's before they can make a lay-up. Now that's INFLUENCE.

The FAT LADY MUST BE SINGING. The Warrior trio have won four titles together. It is doubtful that they can muster another. It is well known that when THE FAT LADY SINGS, IT MUST BE OVER.

There is a buzz that Thompson will be on the trading block. All things come to an end. Basketball fans are fortunate that they have witnessed the right way that the game can be played. The bottom line is it appears that Warrior supremacy is at the end of their era.

As they say time marches on and the former baby peach fuzz face of Curry is over, he now has a beard to prove it. Believe it or not, his mother thought he was too puny to make it in the NBA. Go figure!

NFL BUBBLE BUTT?

When it comes to go figure moment a recent episode of the Amazing Race had a former NFL (National Football League) player being knocked on his bubble. After the second time it occurred Rod Gardner, formerly of the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), said (to paraphrase) WOW!! These guys are hitting for real.

His remark came about during a challenge where he had to play soccer wearing a plastic bubble contraption. Being a former NFL player he is very familiar with a field/pitch and using his feet. Gardner finally got up and made a goal and he and his wife Leticia moved on.

Now here's the drill… I covered the NFL from 1989-96. The three teams I covered were the then LA Rams, LA Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles. I attended the Rams and Raiders practices, games and pre season training camps. Let me say this in the NFL… they hit REALLY HARD FOR REAL!

In preseason when first year players are trying to make the team they really hit hard. Rookie players try to take out senior players to make an impression. Many injuries occur. THESE PLAYERS DO NOT WEAR A PLASTIC BUBBLE!

When games are played, at the four minute mark from the end of the game, reporters exit the press box to go down to the field. We were permitted to stand from the 20 yard line to the end zone. The purpose is so scribes don't have to fight through a crowd in the stands to get to the locker room. In those days there was NO DIRECT access to the player's locker rooms from the press box at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

During a Raiders game an opposing team started from their 40 yard line. The ball was snapped and they came running towards us. We were 50 yards away. You could hear the sound of their footsteps. They sounded like a thundering herd of buffalo as their feet pounded on the turf. It was scary.

That's why, hearing Gardner exclaim, that they, Amazing Race extras, were hitting for real is ACTUALLY is really funny to me. Gardner, having played six seasons in the NFL had to be used to REALLY BEING HIT HARD by PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS not ACTORS!

This episode is a must watch for those familiar with the NFL game.

THIS DAY IN THE NBA

April 23, 1950 The Minneapolis Lakers became the first team to win back-to-back NBA titles when they defeated the Syracuse Nationals 110-95 to win the series four games to two.

April 23, 1969 Jerry West of Los Angeles scored 53 points as the Lakers edged Boston 120-118 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, a series won by the Celtics in seven games. The 53 points by West ranked as the highest-scoring game by a guard in NBA Finals history, before Chicago’s Michael Jordan scored 55 points against Phoenix in Game 4 of the 1993 Finals, a 111-105 Bulls win over the Suns.

April 23, 1989 Alex English of the Denver Nuggets finished the 1988-89 season with 2,175 points, giving him 2,000 or more points for a then record eight consecutive seasons. Karl Malone later posted 11 consecutive 2,000-point seasons.

April 23, 1989 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played in the final game of his NBA-record 1,560-game career, as the Lakers downed Seattle, 121-117. Abdul-Jabbar finished his career with a then NBA record 38,387 points.

April 23, 1995 After handing out eight assists in Utah’s 103-97 road win at Houston, John Stockton captured his eighth straight NBA assist title--tying Bob Cousy’s NBA record--after dishing off for 1,011 assists in 82 games for a 12.3 apg average. Stockton broke the tie by leading the NBA in assists for a record ninth straight season in 1995-96.

April 23, 1995 Steve Kerr of Chicago set the record for the highest three-point field goal percentage in a season at .524.

BIZ WHO IS - TERRY LYONS - The NBA - MARCH 2008
Lyons was instrumental in the effort to integrate NBA players into the Olympic movement prior to 1992. Those efforts helped propel the NBA onto the global stage at an exponential rate: most recently, NBA players represented eight of the 12 counties in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens and 15 of the 24 countries in the 2006 World Championship in Japan. Throughout his career, Lyons helped launch NBA.com, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), NBA TV and the NBA Development League (NBA D-League). In addition, he managed broadcast and public relations relationships with ABC/ESPN, NBC Sports, CBS, CNN and Turner Sports. In 1986, he created and organized NBA Photos to assist NBA Entertainment in chronicling photographically the league’s growth and history. - TV - Business Internet Technology - More BIZ WHO IS
