THE GRAMMY AWARDS

In a special presentation the group Police opened up the awards show in at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, USA last night. The trio also announced that they would be going on tour after over 20 years apart when they went their separate ways in 1984.

Old-timers were recognized in the 49th edition of the Grammy's. But one of the most moving award of the 3 ½ hour presentation was to former American Idol's 4th season winner Carrie Underwood who won a Grammy for best new artist.

Her debut album, Some Hearts, was certified quintuple platinum, and is the fastest selling debut country album of all time. It is also the top selling debut album of any Idol winner or contestant. Underwood thanked and credited Simon Fuller for creating American Idol. Fuller was sitting next to Underwood at the ceremony.

She also performed on the show singing the Eagles hit "Desperado" and Bob Wills "San Antonio Rose".

As a result of something new this year a competition the "My Grammy Moment" contest in which talent could send in an audition tape and have a chance to win and sing on the show with Justin Timberlake was a success.

The top three entrants were at the awards show and introduced while short clips of their video performance were televised. The viewing audience was then asked to call in their vote with the winner being named during the last portion of the telecast.

The winner was ROBYN TROUP who got a lot of airtime on the program singing the best part of two songs with the Timber Man.

Eighty year-old Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder won the Grammy for Pop Collaboration vocal for the song For Once In My Life.

Wonder noted that he did that song before. His version was more rhythmic and upbeat.

The Dixie Chicks had a perfect score by being nominated for five Grammy Awards and winning five.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers may be older than dirt having been on the music scene for a quarter of a century but they remain popular as they won three Grammy's. Mary J Blige won three Grammy's from her eight nominations.

Herb Alpert who has also been around for a while won the Presidents Merit Award with his partner Jerry Moss.

Alpert was the leader of the Tijuana Brass. Last nights Grammy is the ninth of his career that includes 72 million of his recordings being sold worldwide.

Alpert and Moss formed A&M Records who in this generation may be best recognized for having the Carpenters on their A&M label.

Christina Aguilera was an attention getter when she belted out the James Brown hit "It's a Mans World". Her presentation was in the mold of Aretha Franklin.

The Blue part came as it does every year when they announce the talent that passed away this past year.

Those names included Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertagun. Ertagun was responsible in signing and bringing to the worlds attention music legends Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. James Blunt sang and dedicated his hit song to Ertagun.

AMERICAN IDOL ADMITS MISTAKE

In what they admitted was a first the judges, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell admitted that they made a mistake when they rejected contestant Ashton Car who had a good voice but they were critical of her facial expressions.

After Randy and Paula rejected her Car left the room and Simon said that he would have accepted her to go to Hollywood. Randy and Paula thought about it and they called Car back into the room. She sang again and the poor facial expression issue was pointed out again but she was approved to go on to the next round.

The judges admitted that they make mistakes but what about Cowell being the only one that would have approved her on Car's first try. Go figure…

This week the show will move on to Hollywood with the 172 entrants that qualified and start to trim down to the TOP 12 male and 12 female contestants for the finals.

But hey.... Who are these judges Paula, Randy and Simon? The answers are coming on National Radio's Video Beat.
