FROM DIVA TO DROPPED

yea, Yea, sure, sure (Shoe-wah, shoe-wah - in broken English) early on in the top 100 we picked Ashthon Jones 25 as one to watch and would make it to the regular American Idol season 10. We were right as did our other two choices Casey Abrams and Tia Meghia. Jones stood out from the beginning. Her voice was good but not spectacular. Her look was hot and that sold her as she has a striking body and sparkle about her. The problem was her voice failed her as her performances in the round of 24 let her down and she was eliminated. The judges redeemed her and gave her one of six wild card births to perform and make it in the regular program with the 10 contestants selected via viewer voting.

After she made the Top 24 there were signs that she was beginning to acquire an overdose of the celebrity Hollywood lifestyle of glitz and glamour. Her ego grew as she seemed to have fed off of the diva compliments given to her by the AI judges. She played the part shaking her head from side to side and having smart comment when questioned. It appeared that the parties overrode the quality of performance and seriousness of effort and purpose.

In our previous column we noted that she had the fewest Twitter followers of the Idol contestants. With only 296 followers she had the least amount of interest on the social network site. It was apparent then that her bloom was falling off of her rose.

With all of the positive changes the program has taken this season cutting to the chase and not dragging out who was in the bottom three is one of them. Only two groups of three were called out to center stage by host Ryan Seacrest. The first group of three called was Jacob Lusk, Stefano Langone and Karen Rodriguez. Rodriguez quickly got the word that she was in the bottom three.

Adam Lambert the Season 8 runner-up then sang. After his performance Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart and Jones were called out to the center of the stage. Rodriguez was saved and then Seacrest informed Jones and Reinhart that they were both in the bottom three.

P. Diddy then came on to sing a song. When they returned to the show Seacrest informed Reinhart that she was safe and Jones' Idol future was on the line. He asked her if she would have done anything different and her reply was and her reply was that she would have chosen a song that everyone knows.

She was given one last chance to sing for the judges in hope of gaining their approval and using their one time only season save to enable an eliminated contestant to continue on the show. She went to what the judges said was her strength i.e. Diana Ross material and sang Ross' "When You Tell Me That You Love Me."

The result was the judges fell out of love with her as she broke out into tears when she heard the news that they unanimously voted her off the show. As J Lo (Lopez) put it to her softly as in the song lyrics killing me softly with xxx words after knowing that they saved her before to qualify for the TOP 13, "Not this time baby, I'm sorry."

It was the end of the line for the diva and life will go on for the remaining 12 contestants to see who will be the next American Idol.

NOTES:

Performance night was tough on several contestants. The problem is the songs contestants chose were cut down from their original length to one minute and 40 seconds. In doing so a song that normally ahs two verses before the bridge (choirs) was cut down to one. The other problem was due to another change of individual producers working with the artists which replaces the celebrity tutors of the past the producers put their stamp on the song by making arrangements for the singers. Some of the songs went to a modulation (a rise in the key of the song) when it went from the 1st verse to the chorus.

That transition was tough on several contestants including Jacob Lusk and Tia Magia to go slightly off key in making the transition. This change in the show could be a negative as it tends to overproduce the talent and make them think too much as they lose control how they feel comfortable in selling themselves. It lends itself to OVERPRODUCTION and may be a problem.

This change came about when Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine also a songwriter and producer, was made in-house mentor to work with the contestants on a weekly basis. He is supported by associated producers who have major track records in the business. The top contestants who go on to have a recording career will have to work in this manner. The question is... IS THIS TOO MUCH TOO SOON?
