NR TOP 10 - August 2012 - A MIXED BAG of RESULTS THIS MONTH

James Loving - National Radio Text Service

What is going on in Cambodia appeals to our NR readers as the top three stories relate to the kingdom of wonder. Overall Cambodia stories too five of the Top 10 spots. Television reviews followed with three listings the emphasis being continued interest in our follow-up American Idol stories and the Glee Project 2 series now airing in Asia but has completed its run in America. Sports took the remaining two spots with Peyton Manning and Larry Fitzgerald being the focus of interest of a multifaceted column - TOP 3 PRESS RELEASES

Friday August 31, 2012

PHNOM PENH HAPPENINGS SPARK THE MOST INTEREST

Follow Up or Suck Up topped the list moving up from 3rd to 1st. That column asks the question what did the Cambodian government do with the millions of dollars money they raised from telethons to help the families with medical and funeral bills after over 350 people were killed in a panic on a bridge during the 2010 Water Festival.

The underlying problem is that the media in Cambodia is afraid to report the truth, sweeps information under the rug or is simple incompetent. They prefer to stay in good standing with the tyrannical government that dictates what will or won't happen. That includes denying access to credentialed reporters or instructing them to leave to certain press conferences where the nation's boss speaks.

The other problem is the media reports a story at the beginning then may follow up to the court proceeding and verdict BUT there is no follow up from that point as to what the status is of the subject from that point. The story if more likely to be cover at the beginning, the middle but there is NO END.

Russian pedophile Alexander Trofimov was a touchy story that had a major focus at the beginning but coverage diminished over time. He has since been returned to Russia to face charges of having sex with 10-12 year old girls but the Cambodian media HAS NOT followed up with his situation. The history of Cambodia is that it caters to and harbors criminals. There is a possibility that Trofimov could return to Cambodia and live a charmed live of preying on more children for sex.

Second place on our list is what is referred to as a non story. This was a test project where this story did not have a separate title. It was inserted as a page two of another title story and titled DISCRIMINATION Cambodian Style. We wanted to see if there would be a focus of interest to go to that story and it happened.

It's about a prominent former politician who after being found guilty has avoided a sentence for SIX years due to his elite status and the way in which the Cambodia judicial system works in prosecuting the poor and protecting the wealthy and well connected. In contrast poor villagers were arrested and jailed within six hours for the crime of trying to stop their homes from being demolished in a land dispute.

Third place went to our opinion that Cambodia is placing the cart before the horse as they appear to have poor planning in the construction of buildings in already overcrowded and densely populated areas. The result is they are creating a traffic nightmare that will rival Bangkok's. The other side is to relive the traffic the development will bring more destruction of homes will be necessary to build overpasses to accommodate traffic as they have in Bangkok on Petchaburi Road near the World Trade Center. To do so homes would have to be demolished to widen Monivong Boulevard to accommodate construction.

The fourth story is a twist of interest. Our report on NBA player Jeremy Lin titled LIN SANITY FEVER IS OVER has been on the list for a couple of months but the interest is now on the second half of that story with the focus being Peyton Manning search for a new team and we voiced our opinion that he go to the Arizona Cardinals and team up with receiver Larry Fitzgerald. That didn't happen. As it turns out Peyton has a neck injury to protect and he went to the Denver Broncos. The Cardinals weakness is the left tackle position. That position is the most important in protecting the quarterbacks back which could have been a major factor in Manning choosing the Broncos.

The Glee project is our fastest risers. The 10th spot was taken by WHAT'S UP with GLEE, JENNIFER LOPEZ & AMERICAN IDOL? That story rocket to the charts with four days of being published on the 24th and we took our sample on the 28th. The 9th spot was taken by THE GLEE PROJECT 2 is GREATLY IMPROVED.

SECTIONS MOST VISITED

In our sections most visited category only two emerged on the charts that differ from last months results. The Freshie Girl & Boy page returns but the biggest surprise if the NBA 2011 section returning to the charts. There are several hot spot stories in that section which includes Yao Ming, the deceased Walt Hazzard, recently traded Lamar Odom who was traded by the Lakers and lost his TV show but has returns to Hollyweird plus the comparison to the HIV infected for 20 years Magic Johnson and the death of 19-year-old Cambodian national team player Phal Samphors.

ARCHIVES

Former TIMOR ESTE PRESIDENT JOSE RAMOS-HORTA - THE MAN WITH A PLAN was a major surprise as he came in at the number 11 position and is the oldest story to register on the charts. What makes this selection so interesting is that Horta is one of the most interesting and inspiring speakers we have ever heard when he addressed Cambodian students and NGO, academic and government types during his visit to Cambodia in February 2010. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was the president of Timor East at the time. Since then he lost his bid for reelection.

What we intended to report on was his compassion for the development of his people. He instituted programs to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear in influencing thugs to turn their lives around and do something good for their community in building homes for the impoverished. His most impressive achievement was not having his country holding its hand out begging for donor money. He did admit that Timor-Este does receive $200 million a year in development funding. The man with plan pointed out the a large part of their success is derived from their oil and gas reserves while noting that Asia has the largest oil reserves in the world and can be utilized in Asian nations development.

Instead he used some of the revenue from the profits from their oil reserves and created a welfare program in which poor people over the age of 60 could receive $40 a month in assistance. As the oil profits increased so did the benefits to the poor to $60 a month. The strange thing is he was addressing a student body that lives in a country that oppresses its poor and jails them. GO TO YOU TUBE : http://www.fidh.org/Joint-open-letter-to-the-Prime,11759 & LAND GRABBING VIDEO - starts with ELDERLY LADY being CARRIED to prison http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PikgYI52YXA&feature=relmfu

The question is did the students get the message? RAMOS-HORTA is a great man with a superior mind. Aside from winning the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize he was considered to replace Kofi Anan as the head of the UN which he declined preferring to focus on helping his country.

Our second achieves story is about Dr Beat Richner who has been raising money for years to supports his hospitals to give free health care to the poor. When we interviewed him there were two hospitals, one in Phnom Penh and another in Siem Reap. He now has three and his beat goes on to help the poor.

TOP 3 PRESS RELEASES

Over time we became interested in what press releases that we receive generate the most interest and list the Top 3. We initiated the policy last month with success therefore we will continue. Our ranking process is based on the date of release relative to when we take our sample on August 28th. The following are our results,

1. Teen Lifeline to Honor 2012 USA Olympic Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo - Released Saturday August 18, 2012

2. Forbes Publishes Rankings of America’s Top Colleges: Princeton University is No. 1 - Released Tuesday August 07, 2012

3. NBA MEXICO GAME 2012 TO FEATURE NEW ORLEANS HORNETS AND ORLANDO MAGIC THIS OCTOBER - Released Wednesday July 25, 2012

An interesting sidebar to the NBA press release of the Orlando Magic playing in Mexico we pointed out with Dwight Howard insisting on being traded from the Orlando Magic the question is will he be with the team when the Magic play an exhibition game in Mexico Oct. 7th. The answer is he won't as he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
