NR TOP 10 March & April 2011 - OUR ASIAN EQUATION READERS

James Loving - National Radio Text Service

We're combining ratings from March and April from an Asian perspective. The Cambodian child sex trade, business, entertainment and trade show coverage were the main subjects of interest. Our television/video reviews took five of the Top 10 spots. American Idol was the most read subject in driving the television reviews to the top overall subject of appeal.

THE ASIAN PERSPECTIVE

We omitted our Top 10 report last month thus we are combining March and April with this report.

By a quirk of fate our Asian ratings jumped up when we did our search. The explanation is Goggle has two listings for those who search. When you type in National Radio it will take you to a page that asks if you want to read in English. We pressed that but forgot to see a preview and then hit the return button. When we went forward it took us to the Asian listings therefore we decided let fate take its hand.

Most notably that new Zealand Radio has apparently bought the first four positions of 340 million National Radio listings. Common sense dictates that New Zealand has nothing to do with the name National. ABC aka the Australian Broadcast Corp has another position. The there's NPR which has a legitimate National name i.e. National Public Radio. Now you know how Google makes its money in selling ads on hot pages that draw hits.

About 6/7 positions down on the first page we are listed as Welcome to National Radio. The irony is that we were in the web BEFORE GOOGLE. We were number one when all of the listings on the page were named NATIONAL.

We were ranked number one early on in Googles National Radio ratings system. At that time there were only 500 National Radio's listed. Another factor is that we were on the web before the Google company was formed. As former renowned radio journalist Paul Harvey said, "And now you know the rest of the story."

But back to this months ratings report what jumped up was the interest from the Asian perspective in our Business and Entertainment sections. We don't rate those articles since they are not generated from our journalists as they are primarily press releases.

What we will reveal is a tremendous amount of interest in our coverage in the ASEAN Travel Forum and the ICT Internet Technology Expo. Tom Ridge the head of the USA's Homeland Security was the most read business press release. Our overall top story was Part 1 of our 2010 Year in Review. That was followed by Phnom Penh's top 5 stories one of the three Phnom Penh columns to take the following top 3 positions (2, 3 & 4) this month.

The highlight of that piece was our coverage of the documentary Red Light which focused on the child sex trade in Cambodia. This is a practice that has been going on for centuries with 90% of the offenders being Cambodian according to the documentary Girls of Phnom Penh. This disgusting situation is occurring in a country that is more focused on building the tallest building in the region and ignoring the enslavement and abuse of its own people. Cambodia is selling their sizzle and neglecting their steak. The Red Light doc exposes the offhanded attitude of Khmer authorities on the issue.

The third position was our FASTEST RISER that being our Phnom Penh March column titled ICT FAILED TO DELIVER THE WORD - WHAT'S GOING ON? PERHAPS WE'LL NEVER KNOW. The report describes a slipshod telecom conference that was put on by the ICT organizers.

The result was there continue to be more questions to be answered than the information that was provided. It also begs the question WHO IS IDG the organizers? The fourth spot was another Phnom Penh column announcing the ICT event while noting how Internet and telecom technology is changing the face of Cambodia from its OLD Khmer Rouge past to its YOUTHFUL technology smart Khmer future. One glaring red flag that jumps up in that report is the statistics provided by the organizers who in their promotional material claimed that there are 15 million active SIM cards in Cambodia's population of 14 million. The numbers defy logic.

Our television, video reviews columns took five (5, 6, 8, 9, 10) of the top 10 spots making it the most read section. The topic of interest is out take on the new American Idol season and its surplus of talented contestants. The interesting aspect resulting from our praise is what transpired this past week when Pia Toscano was eliminated. Toscano emerged as one of the best singers in the bunch and had that talent to win the competition.

She was eliminated due to the judges falling in love with Casey Abrams a super all around talent but NOT a good singer worthy of being saved in any position. When he was saved in the 11th spot the judges save was used up. We then asked what will happen when someone with a great voice that deserves to be saved can't. That situation came about last week with Toscano.

After saving Abrams the judges were exuberant about their decision with smiles from ear to ear. When our prediction came to fruition with Toscano there was a look of shock on their faces covered with egg. They truly F'd UP!!! If senior judge Randy Jackson defends their stupid decision with that Uncle Reamus Brear Rabbit Zip-Ta-Dee-Do-Dah crap then he needs to be replaced and be dumped into the foul Simon Cowell file.

Of note is the number 10 spot was a story involving CNN's unprofessional approach to journalism with the sensationalized, war mongering reports. This column ties into former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert being the subject focused on his being gay. Now this is a subject that the world needs to know…. RIGHT?

Additionally other fast risers were in the 11th and 12th positions. Those stories also dealt with this subject. One column asked the question was saving Casey Abrams fair in the 11th spot. That was followed by American Idol judges save Casey Abrams in the 12th spot.

To fill in the blank the seventh spot was taken by our January Sport Notes column concerning the demise of the Chelsea football club after the firing of one of its assistants coaches after a blazing start t the season. That story is titled THERE'S A FUNGUS AMONG US - CHELSEA'S PROBLEM - ROMAN ABRAMOVICH NOT ANCELOTTI - The Premier League's Weapon of Mass Destruction - It's nothing new for Chelsea to undergo turmoil after the season starts. The clubs owner Roman Abramovich was at it again repeating his dealings with Jose Mourinho and laying it on Carlo Ancelotti. The question is what's up with that?

TOP SECTIONS VISITED

Business was the most visited section. There were four new entries with the NBA topping the list in rocking up the charts to the number 2 position. American Idol jumped in to the fifth spot, Travel returned and took the 7th position and Television & Video Reviews notched the 10th spot.

ARCHIVES

This month in Archive Top stories we are listing our coverage on IOM (International Organization of Migration) which ties in with the Red Light and girls of Phnom Penh docs. When we did the story we felt this organization can do something about this problem. We later found that it was about raising money and not doing the job.

The other story is A Wounded Life. This was our first story on the subject of young girls being sold into prostitution. It was a play financed by UNESCO and performed by Khmer actors. This shows the problem is more the fault of Khmer society than that of foreigners. This play tells the story of a young village girl tricked into marrying an old Khmer man who then sold her to a brothel.

For those Asians in the Asian region and around the world have a Happy New Year.
