NEW SHOW NEW SEASON

TOP MODEL RETURNS

America's Next Top Model returns to the Southeast Asian airwaves Monday July 16 on Channel V. This will be the 8th Cycle of the program. The series has previously been televised in the USA. In their promo one model admits that she likes to pose in the nude. Hmmmm…. stay tuned for this one.

A new reality show Pirate Masters will premiere this Wednesday July 11 on the AXN network.

PINOY BIG BROTHERS WENDY VALDEZ IN MAXIM MAGAZINE

Pinoy Big Brother contestant Wendy Valdez continues to create a buzz in the Philippine entertainment industry. The contestants 3rd place finisher will be in a pictorial in the August issue of Maxim magazine.

Valdez who is also a fan of America's Next Top Model created a stir during the Big Brother contest when she was evicted from the house and then in an unprecedented move was allowed to return to the show.

Wendy was nominated for eviction for for not wearing her microphone when she rushed to see Bruce after he returned from Slovenia and was being mobbed by the other housemates. She was shockingly voted off the show.

After her return jealousy and arguments surfaced resulting in the once viewer favorite becoming a villain in the eyes of many of the shows fans after she refused to speak to the other two female housemates during the last two weeks of the program. It seemed that she was over the top in her behavior that created tension in the house.

After the series finished she appeared on another program and sang a song with her in house boyfriend Bruce and they sounded very good together. She also sang solo on the Big Bro show and also was surprisingly good.

Other than looks the recently turned 25-year-old shows that she has talent. As Big Brother runner-up Mickey Perz said, "She can act, she can dance, she can sing."

The stress that Valdez showed on the program and perhaps a reason why she was permitted to return to the series after her elimination could be explained by a previous experience she had with the network.

Valdez said that her biggest failure was, "Not being able to make it to Pinoy Dream Academy's Final 20."

An ex-beauty queen, Wendy currently serves as her family's breadwinner. She claims she's going to do anything she has to do to help her family out. She's already done a couple of commercials and tried to work in Japan as an entertainer. The two times she went to Japan, though, she was attacked by homesickness (the first time) and depression (second time). Still in an effort to improve her family's life, she auditioned for Pinoy Dream Academy. She never got past the final 38.

Given her talent and the choices that the Dream Academy show made in selecting the Final 20 it's easy to understand her bitterness. She should have made it. On the Big Brother show she was only 76,188 votes behind second place Mickey.

The problem is that shoulda, woulda, coulda doesn't even count in horseshoes; the only thing that does is results.

Given the results of what appeared to be an over produced and under managed Dream Academy program Valdez has the talent to easily finish second on that program. Since she's not a songwriter as is the Dream Academy winner Yeng Constantino it is doubtful that she could have been that shows winner.

Agree or not Valdez has too much talent not to have a successful entertainment career in the Philippines. Stay tuned...

AMERICAN IDOL

Well someone said something from American Idol other than the man with four vowels Simon Cowell. Paula Abdul made an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show that aired in America after the Golden Globe Awards about six months ago. Yes folks we get them late here in Southeast Asia.

The subject was how bad the talent was that auditioned for the show in Seattle, Washington. This is a subject that Cowell previously addressed on other talk shows before the AI finals with his opinion being that they were the worst.

Abdul said that they were "Equally great and horrible." She was closer to the truth than Cowell as three of the top seven AI finishers auditioned in Seattle. Who are they? The answer in our column next week.

ALYSSA MILANO

Alyssa Milano is a noted actress and humanitarian, has spent most of her life as an entertainer, having appeared on such major television programs in the USA as "Who's the Boss?" and "Charmed." Milano has been named the founding ambassador of the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Disease Control (GLOBAL NETWORK).

.ABS-CBN BUILDS TALENT POOL

The Philippines ABS-CBN Network continues to develop their new talent on the hit variety show ASAP by taking it in steps. Many of their talent appear on ASAP the day following their dismissal from a reality show. Logically it helps to ease the let down of losing.

This year the network is going all out to develop talent from within to fulfill their commitment to supply programming for their expanding International network. The results continue to come in with Saicy Aguila and Dionne Dennia Monsanto being the benefactors of the program.

Saicy finished in the eighth position of Big Bro evictions and Dionne much further down the list. After their eviction on the show they appeared on ASAP dancing and since that time they continue to rack up winning credits as performers on the ABS-CBN Network as dancers and in Dionne's case acting.

This past week they program added singing to their talent repertoire as they joined Big Brother hostess Toni Gonzaga in singing a song in harmony.

Gonzaga is one of the Philippines biggest TV/movie/recording stars. This indicates the learning curve and development process of the network in teaming up newcomers with seasoned talent that helps build a new talent's confidence. Stay tuned

IT'S ON !!!

THE APPRENTICE

In the It's On category, Donald Trumps Apprentice is one that shows Asian youth can learn what it takes to be involved in top level business in the USA.

One could argue that it's unrealistic for Asian youth to aspire to that. The point being is that The Apprentice program is a better influence than rap music depicting violence and women as ho's (whores)? It's a matter of choice and what one chooses to do with their time and influences.

The current Apprentice series was televised last summer on Malaysia's TV 3. This is the worst of the bunch due to a poor cast. In television they say that after the script CASTING IS EVERYTHING.

The show airs Thursday evenings in Southeast Asia. Please see the schedule below.

QUEEN LATIFAH

New Line Cinema’s film Hairspray hits the big screen on Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m. with a gala premiere in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s 2,750-seat Prudential Hall. A full evening of activities is planned to honor the return of one of the film’s stars, Queen Latifah, to her hometown of Newark.

The fun-filled evening will include family friendly pre-screening festivities, a Hollywood-style red carpet celebrity arrival ceremony, a VIP cast party, and fireworks and additional entertainment in NJPAC’s Theater Square after the screening. In addition, Queen Latifah will be honored with a formal presentation of her star on NJPAC’s “Walk of Fame.” She also will receive an honorary induction into the Women’s Association of NJPAC, in recognition of her continual philanthropic support of Newark.

Hairspray is an adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway production and comes 16 years after the release of John Waters’ cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show.

Hairspray opens nationally on July 20. Full story
