BLASTS FROM THE PAST

Given its Happy Holiday time when all of the TV networks and news media sit back and do their recall of the year we are taking a look at our all-time most read Top 10 charts and visited sub pages.

The most viewed TOP 10 column was last month November which features our coverage of the aftermath of the tragic deaths of 353 people who were crushed or smothered on the Diamond Bridge in Phnom Penh while celebrating Cambodia's Water Festival.

From there the ratings leaped back in time to March 2007 where pop singer Ronan took center stage and drove the ratings up with his concert appearance in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Of the top 10 selections three came from 2007. The year that took the most spots was 2008 with four while 2009 took the other two positions.

In a 2009 experiment we split the column in parts with the column text separated from the top 10 list. The result was the list received the most views and took the seventh in the overall most viewed NR Top 10 columns.

The sub page results were quite shocking as some sections have accumulated numbers over a period of time on subjects that we no longer cover most namely the Freshie Girl & Boy contest. That page matured from a search to the bookmark direct link from interested sources category that has taken a life of its own although we deleted our link to the page three years ago.

Of the 10 categories seven are new from our previous months most viewed sections in 2010. The major surprises include the Entertainment section from 2006, the television section from 2008, as well as the television archives section.

ARCHIVES

We tried something different with our archives choices. In a search for the three oldest most viewed stories from our top 70 listings. Ironically they turned out to be American sports stories. It was an aberration from our previous results.

Those top sports stories include Jordan Rules a feature of the former NBA star and now owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats. The focus of the story is about his second comeback to the NBA after retiring from the league twice. Jordan proved that he was still great at the age of 38. That story ranked third.

The second place top archive sports story is about a person not known internationally but well known and respected in the USA. He's Howie Long who came up the hard way living a tough life in a tough Boston Massachusetts neighborhood from a broken home. This human interest story transcends all nations of how to pick yourself up and move forward from a difficult situation via dedication and hard work.

Long had a stellar NFL (National Football League) career as an all-pro player with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders. The former Villanova University star was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame. After his football playing days were over Long moved into the broadcast booth as a NFL game analyst for the Fox Television Network. He also had a brief film career mainly on action films that included films Firestorm, a 1998 film in which he starred. He also appears in the movie Broken Arrow alongside John Travolta. He played a minor role in the movie 3000 Miles to Graceland, alongside Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, and Courtney Cox.

The Top Archive sports story is one we couldn't remember what it was all about. The Super Bowl 2006 took first place honors as our all time top Archive sports story. That featured Jerome (Get On The Bus) Bettis who was a great guy and had a sterling NFL career. He will be a hall of fame selection in time.

We wish all good health and a Happy & Prosperous New Year
