SPORTS NOTES REVIVED

It's been a while but our sports coverage dominates our NR TOP 10 ratings this month in taking the top 3 spots. Much of it was driven by the seemingly never ending controversy of who is better the NBA's former superstar Michael Jordan or the new kid on the block Kobe Bryant. We laid it out that both are great players but Jordan has a more team oriented history as opposed to Bryant's my way or the highway approach.

But there is more to the answer to this story. What is lacking from those that voice their opinion is there lack of knowledge and exposure to the NBA due to their youth. What they don't know is the skill level of one of who we feel is the greatest NBA player ever Elgin Baylor. Baylor played during the late 50's and through 1971/72 season when he retired at the start after only nine games into the campaign. He was the leagues rookie of the year in 1959. He was the leagues top scorer during his early years until he suffered a knee injury.

As a rookie in 1958-59, Baylor finished fourth in the league in scoring (24.9 points per game), third in rebounding (15.0 rebounds per game), and eighth in assists (4.1 assists per game). He registered 55 points in a single game, then the third-highest mark in league history behind Joe Fulks' 63 and George Mikan's 61. Baylor led the Lakers from last place the previous year to the NBA finals, where they lost to the Boston Celtics in the first four game sweep in finals history. Thus began the greatest rivalry in the history of the NBA. During his career, Baylor helped lead the Lakers to the NBA Finals seven more times.

From the 1960-61 to the 1962-63 seasons, Baylor averaged 34.8, 38.3 and 34.0 points per game, respectively. On November 15 of the 1960-61 season, Baylor set a new NBA scoring record when he scored 71 points in a victory against the New York Knicks while grabbing 25 rebounds. In doing so, Baylor had broken his own NBA record of 64 points that he had set in the previous season.

Baylor was a United States Army Reservist who was called to active duty during the 1961-62 season. He was stationed in Washington state enabling him to play for the Lakers only when on a weekend pass. Despite playing only 48 games during the 1961-62 season, he still managed to score over 1,800 points for a 38.3 ppg. average. Later that season, in a game five NBA Finals victory against the Boston Celtics, Baylor grabbed 22 rebounds and set the still-standing NBA record for points in an NBA Finals game with 61.

Baylor began to be hampered with knee problems during the 1963-64 season. The problems culminated in a severe knee injury, suffered during the 1965 Western Division playoffs. Baylor, while still a very powerful force, was never quite the same, never again averaging above 30 points per game.

The irony is that Baylor was never on an NBA title winning team. He was teamed with another NBA Hall of Fame player Jerry West who also averaged over 30 points a game for several seasons. The twist is the year Baylor called it quits 1972 was the year the Lakers won the title and set an NBA record with 33 consecutive wins.

With his superb athletic talents and all-round game, Baylor was seen as the kind of player who could save a franchise, and he did. According to Minneapolis Lakers owner Bob Short in a 1971 interview with the Los Angeles Times: "If he had turned me then down, (to sign with the Lakers) I would have been out of business. The club would have gone bankrupt."

Entertainment rules as our column on The Voice Marathon notched the fourth position. This is the perfect time to view the shows in their entirety as they are airing re-runs of the entire season on the AXN Network in East Asia. At this point things turned ugly on our NR TOP 10 ratings with politics and war focused content taking center stage.

We questioned what rewards a journalist receives from covering wars. We wanted to know why they would place themselves in an environment to be witness to people being killed and having to view bodies with missing limbs and their internals hanging out.

Another grisly byproduct of covering is being exposed to women and children being maimed by attacking US forces. The US is obvious sine they invade other countries and have never been invaded by a foreign power thus the onus is on them for being the aggressors and killers. That story is ranked 5th this month.

The 6th slot was taken by CNN'S Wolf Blitzer who continually rants on about Israel and how they are picked on. Our focus was on his alarming CNN viewers with his overblown and misused BREAKING NEWS angry outbursts. For over a week Blitzer claimed that North Korea was prepared to attack the west coast of the US, Japan and South Korea AT ANY MOMENT with a missal attack.

He had people on the ground STANDING BY to report and more information. His blunder went on and on for eight days. When the attack NEVER HAPPENED he was saved by the Boston bombings which gave him and the irresponsible CNN to go to another tragic story that they love to cover. The bottom line is CNN is worthless as is the LYING and contriving Wolf Blitzer. BREAKING NEWS.... OHHH PLEASE...

War, murder and political stories took five of the bottom six spots. IS CNN THE ISRAELI NETWORK notched the 8th spot. Again CNN focuses on depicting Israel as the victim as women and children were being slaughtered in Gaza from Israeli air attack bombings. CNN presents to Israeli perspective that they are protecting their land. They omit the part that they invaded and murdered Palestinians in 1948 to occupy that region. Israel cries too much given that they have nuclear weapons to in the contrast of nuclear terms their enemy's equivalent weapons that are analogous to a sling shot.

CAMBODIA'S POLITICAL FOOTBALL returned to take the 9th spot. It's a sordid tale regarding how politics work in a nation where the poor continue to be oppressed and those with political connections can get away with murder. Why this story returned to the top 10 is a mystery. The only explanation is Cambodia will have its election in a few days. Cambodia's election for their prime minister occurs every six years. The party in power has held control since the mid 80's.

The 10th spot was taken by our column FILMMAKER MARC EBERLE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS. This story is about Eberle's documentary "Aung San Suu Kyi: The Choice." The film took four years to make. During that time Suu Kyi went from Nobel Prize winning dissident to a politician. The documentary included interviews and archive footage of her former husband and two sons as well as outgoing US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

SECTIONS MOST VISITED

Someone once told me that people will spend their last dollar on sports or entertainment. That opinion was well served in the results of our latest review of our sections most visited. Sports and entertainment took five of the top 10 spots. Business and travel related sections took three positions.

ARCHIVES

THE MOST SECRET PLACE ON EARTH which we have coined THE SECRET WAR tops our archive list. This Marc Eberle documentary used CIA video footage from the time of the American/Vietnam War that was released in 2008. The film reveals the who, what, where, when and how the CIA set up 400 secret air bases in the mountains of Laos. It includes scenes of how the CIA recruited the Homing Hill tribe people including children to become soldiers. When the CIA used them up they spit them out and abandoned many of them. The US denied those air bases existed.

Now that Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning are currently being persecuted for exposing how the US breaks international laws lies, and deceives the public makes this story more relevant.

Eberle was very clear about why he chooses to focus on this type of subject matter as he pointed out to, "Get a chance to say what I think is important and which rarely is heard in the mainstream. Self indulgent stuff really."

This documentary is a must see to balance out the perception of American politics. Eberle's documentary is a must see as it exposes how the US and CIA work with lies and deceit that is diametrically opposite the images that CNN force feeds the public.

Over the past 30 days the Los Angels Lakers of the NBA have made a lot of noise with all-star player Dwight Howard shunning the team and choosing to sign with the Houston Rockets. They then cut their ties with Metta World Peace aka Ron Artest and currently are looking to fill those gaps and fit a team together to play with Kobe Bryant.

Looking back exactly 10 years we came across our story published July 28, 2003 of the Lakers being in a similar transition stage when they signed superstars Karl Malone and Gary Payton. An NBA title was expected with a team of superstars. The problem was it didn't turn out that was as age was a factor.

PRESS RELEASES

Since we initiated this review of press release readership business continues to rule the results. This month a travel related release the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Reopens an Art Deco Prince De Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in Paris notched the top spot. It is the first travel related press release to do so.

Time Warner the parent company of CNN took tow of the top five positions with one related to it doing business in China and featuring their Chairman & CEO Jeff Bewkes. Univision Promotes Sarah Madigan to Executive Vice President and Deborah Turness Named President of NBC News strengthened the interest in television networks from our readers
