HALEY'S COMET FLAMED OUT

It's done and dusted Scott McCreery and Lauren Alaina are the finalists on American Idol making it the best two voices that we have ever witnessed competing for the title. Given country music is their expertise it will be a country music style tittelist to be crowned next weeks. The Idol finals show will be telecast a day earlier next week. In Asia that translates into the performance show being televised on Wednesday and the results show finale on Thursday.

In the decider of the Top 3 the most impressive improvement fro the beginning was from the four time Bottom 3 selection Haley Reinhart who was eliminated in the third position but went down fighting. During the Top 3 performance show Reinhart dressed to impress and made that most dramatic change on the first of the three songs the contestants performed on the night.

The first song selection was by the contestants and Reinhart shocked the audience with an energetic vocal "What Is and What Should Never Be" (Led Zeppelin) with her guitar playing father accompanying her. Listen up…. her father has chops (is good/can play) and Reinhart rocked the house. The striking young lady from Chicago beamed with confidence as she pranced around the stage as her father ripped off the chords of the song. The 21-year-old walked behind the platform stage that surrounded the judges and tripped while walking up the steps on her return to the main stage. Without missing a beat she gainfully jumped up and finished her performance in a strong professional manner.

Reinhart has a raspy voice that drew praise from the days mentor Beyonce Knowles and the judges. Her second song was chosen by in-house mentor Jimmy Iovine who chose Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks song "Rhiannon." Reinhart did a decent job but lost power in the low register (low notes).

Her third song was selected by the judges who chose "You Oughta Know" (Alanis Morissette) which was more up-tempo and she had a better performance than she did on the Nicks song. Of the three songs she performed her song choice the best. Her second best effort was the judge's choice and Iovine's choice was the least appealing.

The bottom line is Reinhart rocked but was not the strongest performer of the evening as was Lauren Alaina thus was eliminated. What she did do was verify Iovine's belief in her talent. Should she go on and become a rocker she will be one of the most attractive female rock vocalists ever.

We've had our doubts about the sexy blond being talented enough to make it in the record business but she has now gained our respect. This was Reinhart's most impressive performance of the season. She clearly defined her talent and ability to be a rocker. The problem was she was up against two of the best voices in Idol history.

The bottom line and true test is Iovine's belief in her as he's the boss and the CEO of Interscope Records which replaced Sony Music Entertainment as Idol's official partner record label. He's extolled her talent throughout the competition as he did the same for Pia Toscano who he signed to a recording contract after she was eliminated in the ninth position. Toscano's record will be released after the American Idol winner is decided. If Iovine truly believes in Reinhart's talent he could show it by also signing her to a recording contract. In doing so he could fulfill her dreams and try to make her a recording star. The ball is now on Iovine's court.
