NR TOP 10 - October 2012 - POLITICS & TV REVIEWS RULE

James Loving - National Radio Text Service

There are a massive amount of changes in this months NR TOP 10 RATINGS. Only one story remains from last months charts. The televised presidential debates in the United States created a stir in our Top 50 listings but only one made the Top 10. Two new entries made the sections most visited. In ARCHIVES we feature our tribute to America's NFL (National Football League) with three of our most memorable stories. This month we're noting five press releases of which two are human interests stories two entertainment and one sports

SPORTS RETURNS with HOT TOPICS

The beat goes on in our new NR Top 10 Ratings with politics taking center stage. Politics is not our forte but due to America's presidential race and televised debates it rings out loud via our television coverage aka Video Beat. US president Barack Obama's strong comeback showing in the 2nd televised presidential debate ranks 2nd on our charts.

The top spot was also our fastest riser in taking the number one position within three days of release. That story is if the passing of Cambodia's King Nordom Sihanouk at the age of 89.

That Phnom Penh column also delves into the governments concern regarding the reporting of the political murders in the country by the Voice of America and Radio Free Asia. The government feels the reporting is biased. The reality is those who were murdered have no say in the matter thus the reports were made in their behalf and for justice. Khmer VOA chief Chris Decherd voiced their position that the reports will continue. Decherd previously was the bureau chief for Associated Press (AP) in Cambodia.

The human rights issue and murders and the jailing of journalists and activists was also one of our top 5 press releases taking the 4th spot. The OPCC (Overseas Press Club of Cambodia) issued a statement condemning a journalist's murder and urged for a transparent investigation which never happened.

Television reviews (Video Beat) took five of the Top 10 positions. That was followed by Sports Notes with three and our Phnom Penh columns took the other two spots.

American Idol continues t maintain interest taking two spots. The only story to remain on the charts from last month was from our June Sports Notes column when the Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant made a statement the 2012 US Olympic basketball team could defeat the 1992 US Dream team featuring Michael Jordan. Bryant later recanted his statement by saying that at least they could win one game. That is likely but we want some of what Bryant is smoking.

Another NBA story zoomed up the charts to take the 9th spot with four days of release. The Sports Notes column was inspired by a press release that NBA commissioner David Stern was retiring in 2014. It will conclude 30 years of his being the man in charge and he will leave behind his emperor's clothes as the boss of the NBA to become a normal citizen or a practicing lawyer to which he has a degree. The question is can he pass the bar?

Christiano Ronaldo returns to the charts and his story is ranked 10th. His pouting temperament flared up once again and he is living in no happy land. His goal scoring productivity apparently if not receiving the credit he feels it deserves. This could turn into a Hollyweird story as he is managed by the group that manages David Beckham and American Idol. It's an ohhh please situation.

SECTIONS MOST VISITED

There are shifts in positions in the SECTIONS MOST VISITED. Only two new sections made the charts. Sports Notes returns after an absence of several months. The Cambodia section returns after several months off. The political murders and incarceration of journalists, activists and children defending their homes is the driving force behind the power of this section. During the past two years we have included press releases in this section regarding these topics from the Overseas Press Club of Cambodia and activist Theary Seng.

ARCHIVES

In tribute to America's NFL (National Football League) this month we are featuring three of our most memorable NFL stories. Two of them were inspired buy the featured subjects now retired from the have moved on to become television analysts of the league. There are two other former players that are deserving of being acknowledged Deon Saunders and Michael Irvin who are also game analysts. Both are and were talkative but our features of those players were for radio only that aired on over 600 stations in America. We have a copy of the Saunders radio interview and will highlight it at a later time.

Of the three we are featuring including Howie Long, Marshall Faulk and Walter Peyton Faulk from which stands out the most since he overcame his lone shortcoming at the time. When we interviewed him he was a freshman at San Diego State University and had broken the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) rushing record after playing in only his second college game. He rushed 37 times for 386 yards, 7 TDs (touchdowns) vs. Pacific. The seven TD's also set an NCAA record by a freshman. (The rushing yardage total record has since been broken). Faulk was only 18-years-old at the time and the school's SID (Sports Information Director) informed us that it was doubtful that he would talk since he was shy as well as being young and not experienced doing interviews with the press.

Reluctantly accommodated our request and stood frozen to the wall in the hallway outside of the locker room. There was another problem that being the NCAA for whom the story was primarily for frowned on doing stories on freshman. The feeling was that they hadn't had time to prove that they were worthy of the coverage but we convinced them that this guy was special and worthy.

Faulk loosened up as the interview progressed and we got our story. The network was pleased and Faulk went on to have a very successful college and professional career. It was good enough for him to be inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame. The twist to his story is that he proved the NCAA fears wrong and has left his shyness behind to become a very qualified TALKATIVE NFL analyst.

The second most notable NFL feature is of Howie Long also in the NFL Hall of Fame. Long is a rags to riches story who was raised in the Boston area the product of a broken home. He was shifted from relative to relative until he received a football scholarship to Villanova University where he made his mark as a quality player.

Long played is entire career with the Oakland/LA Raiders. The team moved from Oakland to LA and returned during Long's tenure. Long was a star from the start and earned the reputation of being a no bullshit hard worker. We covered the Raiders for five seasons. During that time Long was moody particularly after a loss and not a talky guy. Eventually we got him on one of his good days and surprisingly he gave us a very humorous and revealing interview.

Following his playing career Long went on to try acting and stared in the film Firestorm. He has been a NFL analyst for the past 20 years. Long also has a son Chris Long who is currently a star player with the Saint Louis Rams.

Last but not least is the story of Walter Payton another Hall of Fame player who tragically passed away from cancer at a young age of 45. Payton was considered by many as one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. Payton was the NFL's all-time career rushing leader with 16,726 yards. He was the league MVP twice. The NFL Hall of Fame member was also a champion, having been a member of the Chicago Bears 1985 Super Bowl team.

We saw him play but didn't interview him as a player. We talked to him during the 1992 Super Bowl in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At that time Payton was trying to obtain an NFL franchise for the city of Saint Louis as a part of a group of investors. What surprised us was his small stature given his big reputation. He was one of the most accommodating, cheerful and polite athletes we have ever encountered. Payton failed in his bid and passed away November 1, 1999.

TOP 5 PRESS RELEASES

Due to the popularity of our publishing the most accessed press releases the decision was made to continue and expand the report. This month we are featuring the top five most accessed releases. Three of the Top 5 are entertainment business related. One of those being the unfortunate situation of TV presenter Robin Roberts illness ranks 5th.

The top spot is a release of an album of long time rock stars adding jazz fusion to their repertoire resulting in the title 'The Fusion Syndicate'. Entertainment took the 3rd spot with the band Journey making a benefit performance.

The NBA's announcement of their new anti-flopping rule nailed 2nd place. The most revealing release was a report from the OPCC (Oversees Press Club of Cambodia) regarding the murder of a journalist believed to be a political assassination which is only one of several suspected political murders since April of 2012. More press releases regarding the murders and protests from activists and the OPCC can be accessed from the Cambodia Sub page.
